Hello;
Well the check engine light ios probably on. The transmission is trying to start out in 3rd gear. You may have lost the neutral safety switch. These switches do not act like the old ones. They are mounted on the side of the 4l60E transmission. Try this first. Purchase a new neutral safety switch from GM (only). Have it installed and then clear the codes. Your tach and speedo should work and the trans should also work again. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

time for a trans rebuild.
Best bet is to get it to a shop as it just may be something easy, but as a chevy mechanic, I honestly HATE every GM transmission.

I had the transmission re-built a little over a year ago. Now it is reving up to 4000rmps before it'll change gears and jerks when it does. Electrical test showed that all the gears were not lining up...

I would contact transmission rebuilder and let him know. It sounds like the torque converter is defective. That will happen if the transmission is not flushed completely after a rebuild.

Your clutch has failed. Big job...transmission needs to be removed. The over-reving you felt was the friction material on the clutch disc not gripping the flywheel.

My jimmy won't shift into high gear or reverse, it just revs up. Other gears still work. This came on supers suddenly, drove it somewhere and it was fine, then when drove about 10 miles towards home, it...

Does it also hold first gear longer that it should and then shift right from 1st to 3rd? It sounds like you broke the sun shell in the transmission. The trans will need to replaced or rebuilt.

2001 gmc jimmy 4.3l.idles low and will stall when put into gear unless engine is reved up a little.

Clean the Idle air control valve (IAC), it's located by the throttle body so the best thing to do is give the throttle body a good cleaning with throttle body cleaner. Do not use carb cleaner, it's to corrosive for the gaskets used on the throttle body's. Just follow the instruction on the spray can and after your done putting everything back together. Turn the ignition key's to the run position for 10 seconds and then off for 10 seconds to reset the IAC. Start the engine and let idle for 1 min and go for a test drive. If that does not work, turn the ignition to the run position and pull the ecm(BATT) fuse out for 30 seconds and then place it back in start te engine. The engine may stall but let it, don't touch anything. Just start it again and let idle for 1 min then go for a test drive. The ECM is just relearning the sensors like the first time the jimmy was driven off the assembly line. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted be glad to get your jimmy running 100%.

1994 GMC Jimmy not switching gears

1994 transmission is all electronic shift so if you have a blown fuse you will likely start in second gear and never change, also when you let off the accelerator pedal the engine will return to idle rather than stay reved up till the vehicle stops. I would check your fuses and any wires in the area you worked while addressing the coolant leak you could have knocked a wire loose. also check the vaccum line going to your map sensor on the passengers side of engine beside the throttle body.
