A sensor for the indicators? Maybe on a late model car there may be such gimmickry, but I would say for cars of older vintage, it's always check fuses first, bulbs second, check for power from fuse panel going into turn signal switch, and power out. If something seems amiss, suspect the turn signal switch. From that switch, the indicator signal will go to the flasher relay, where it's broken into a repeating signal of short bursts of power (it's broken into blinks!), and from there it travels to bulbs, front and rear, causing them to blink. As long as the ground is good, that is, and very unlikely you would lose grounds on both front and rear of car at same time.
See? It's really pretty simple. Helps to have a voltmeter, or test light at least. And watch for some cars having the hazard lights wired up with the turns. Sometimes a defect in one switch will affect the other.
