Engine rocks when engaging transmission

Hello all, Im about to purchase a 1999 VW Passat, it is a 1.8L turbo engine with automatic transmission. when you put it into drive, the engine rocks a little. the person Im buying the car from says it is the engine mounts needing to be replaced. is this accurate or am I looking at a major repair down the road ?
also, at 114k miles, do I need to worry about getting the timing belt replaced soon ? (he does not know if it has been, he is a auctioneer)
thank you for any help you can give.
Mike

You do need new Motor Mounts. The timing should be Good unless you have Problems with a Rough Idle.

2001 vw passat not shifting out of first

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

Transmission slams hard when down shifting. rattles car. 2007 vw passat. 2.0 turbo automatic

Need more clarification when driving and park. Happen to vw a lot with no solution. Could be electrical ( Tcm + Wiring conector, ECM) ( fluid change fluid+filter add lucid tray oil) or mechanical. Rattle could be engine or evap thing located under or next to air filter. Alternator also. The engine you speak of is know for sludge build up problems by VW. They've even made recalls base on what I've heard. Check oil circulation and how to fix oil circulation problem. Drop the the oil pan and clean filter screen where it sucks in oil. Other things related need to be unclog..

Hello. What's the recommended automatic Transmition oil for Passat 1999?

Hi k_belal,

The recommended transmission fluid for the 1999 VW Passat is Esso LT 71141. There are several US distributors of it, but it is mostly stocked in drums, and sold at a pretty high dollar($15-$19) for single quarts.

I hope this helps.

Need to replace Driver side Headlight on 2004 VW Passat 1.8L Turbo engine GLS. I have heard you have to remove the bumper, in which case I will not tackle the project. Is this true?

If the light casing needs replasing then im pretty sure you have to remove the upper bumper, but if its the bulb thats blown the you should be able to do it from the engine bay. I hope this information helps im sorry i couldnt help more but im not a vw specialist.
