Question about 1995 Chevrolet Lumina
This is the second time in a month that we have found the radiator on my lumina empty. It doesn't overheat with steam, we just notice that the thermostat gauge is on the red-line. The overflow container is still full, so the first time we didn't even realize it was empty, luckily we doubled checked. There are no puddles under the car when parked. We were thinking maybe it's leaking while it's running, like maybe from the radiator itself, but if so why is the overflow full?
Most likely your head gasket is blown. Water is entering your exhaust ports and being vaporized out your exhaust pipe. You should also check your oil stick to make sure it's not milky or white looking. Depending on where the gasket is blown some water could be entering your crankcase. This could cause your crank bearings to fail and will require an engine or engine rebuild. Much less expensive to replace the head gasket before you have engine failure from over heating or bearing damage.

A radiator cap with a bad seal will allow the coolant bottle to stay full but the rest of the coolant system to get low. Water pumps on the V6 engines will leak only when the engine is running. But you will find coolant on the right side of the car. If you do not see coolant on the ground where you park it could be the intake manifold gaskets leaking. This has been a big problem for GM, run a Google search. You can take it to a service center and they can test the system and tell you where the coolant is going.
