Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My 1997 Buick Park ave chug a chugs when going up a hill at abput 40mph. It shifts fine until I hit a upward grade in the road and rpms and speed drop. It starts chugging very badly. If I put the peddle to the floor it takes a little bit but then down shifts and chugging goes away. Trans fluid level is ok. Fluid is a little old. 104,000 miles on car. Motor mount by grill of car looks like it might need replacing. Could this be the problem? Need car to last another year and is prob not worth money to rebuild trans. Can you help?

Nothing wrong with the trans. You need to run a diagnostic test on it to find our what codes come up so you'll know what sensor is bad.

SOURCE: Car moves backwards in "Park"

can be that the cable for your shifter lever needs to be adjusted in the engine bay on the transmission itself. it may be that when you shift it into park the lever doesn't reach far into the park position hence would still be in reverse and then when it bucks thats when the time it slips into park.

SOURCE: oil mixing with coolant

If this is a 3800, Upper Intake Plenum or Lower intake gaskets are an inevitability. Head gaskets on these engines rarely go out! Seriously, don't get duped. I am doing the job on my grand prix right now. Google it for further explanation.

SOURCE: rx300 with 143000 miles, overdrive won't engage

Start by checking the least expensive items:

Make sure you are not activating the O/D switch in the shift stick inadvertently.

Look at the display panel, if the "Eng" light is on, you must get the code and repair the affected item. If you have knock sensors and/or oxygen sensors malfunctions that may prevent the transmission from shifting to O/D.

Check the ground cables located in the engine compartment, especially the ones behind the air intake manifold. If they are loose or broken it affects the ECU (car computer) and causes the transmission to work erratically. If they become disconnected it may burn the ECU and shut down the car.

Now going to more profound mechanics, it could be a sticking shift solenoid valve, your RX300 transmission have five of those located were the transmission oil strainer (filter) is. It can also be an ECU malfunction and/or related to the wiring from the ECU to the transmission connectors.

Always start from the least expensive and recheck the obvious. Good luck.

Sounds like you are getting too miuch fuel and not enough air. Try replacing your spark plugs and wires, then cleaning your throttle body. Replace the air filter too if its been awhile. This will probably fix the problem.

The overdrive disengages when road speed drops below the threshold. Normally, when you speed up above the threshold you should be able to simply reengage overdrive. You may have a faulty speed sensor preventing that.

1997 park ave battery dies over night

I just posted my experience in another place on this site but on my 1992 PA the accessories relay stuck closed. This relay is the one that allows you to listen to the radio etc and keep things on until you open the door then all shuts off. When it is stuck closed accessories keep running until your battery drains dead. The relay was replaced and all worked great.

Rough, chugging when driving and conking out

Could also be a faulty mass air flow meter, or throttle position sensor. It's hard to tell, you need to take it to a shop to be properly diagnosed.
