The speedometer on all Fiero's is electronic, so there is no speedometer cable to break. There is a sending unit with a gear that is driven off of both the manual and automatic transmissions located on the top of the transmission that may be faulty, or the wiring between the sending unit and the may be suspect. I believe the sending unit is held by a single bolt so you could remove it easily.

I have a 1985 fiero and had the same problem. Fiero do not have a speedometer cable the speed is sent from a governer on the tranz to the gauage. So in short the gauage needs to be replaced.

It could be the speedo cable could be worn or the cluster itself could be bad

Have you replaced the speed sensor? Also I still think you need to have the stepper motor replaced in the speedo head. A bench test is not reliable for this type of instrument.

place a tester between the negative battery cable and the neg battery terminal it should light up because of the short. then start pulling fuses, if the light goes out you have found the bad circuit

1986 Fiero: my e brake on my 85 fiero is stuck and i need it t...

It probably got stuck from lack of use/lubrication. But if your lever is also stuck up it could be a function of the actual lever action. I'm assuming you tried pushing the button in to release the lever?

Step 1) Get a haynes manual if you own a fiero, VERY valuable tool

Step 2) Check the physical action of the lever, is the lever not releasing down because of the lever itself? --> frozen/rusted? something physically blocking it on the floor of the car? Or is it not releasing due to the cable tension?

It's been awhile since I looked at it, but there should be a way to take the cover off of the lever to see the cable come into the shaft from underneath the car. Follow this cable to the rear of the car where it goes to the driver side rear brake caliper, then across the car to the passenger side caliper. You can adjust the tension for the cable using the nuts on the cable.

Also, there is a spring on each caliper that is supposed to put tension on the cable when pulled, so when released the cable returns to driving position and thus releases the brakes. Are these springs missing?

Are the brakes engaged because of the e-brake being stuck?

If you are in a pinch and need to use your car and can't because the brakes are on due to a stuck e-brake, it's not smart and can be illegal in your state, but you could just cut the e-brake cable. Should be pretty easy to do where it meets the lever on the inside of the car.

Manual or auto?

It's gotta be the cable/linkage. You just have to inspect them and see if something is worn or snapped. They get old and crusty and need to be replaced eventually. I had to replace my shift cable on my 86 se with the 5-speed getrag.

Hopefully it's not the actual tranny....?

Speedodometer stays on 20mph when not moving

this is in the speedometer unit itself. either purchase a known good part from an auto recycler or people still rebuild these. on these, they are individual little motors inside and they will probably just replace the speedo motor and reseal it. unfortunately you can not purchase these parts yourself.
