Question about 1990 Jeep Cherokee Limited

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 5 speed. To start it you have to turn the engine over and it engages but doesnt quite catch. You have to turn the key all the way off then over about 10 times before the engine catches and it actually starts. Once started it runs like a dream. I just replaced the fuel pump and altenator.

I THINK I ALREADY SENT YOU AN ANSWER, BUT IF NOT HERE GOES AGAIN. YOUR STARTER BENDIX SOUNDS BAD. IT IS LOCATED IN THE STARTER. YOU CAN REPLACE IT, OR JUST GET ANOTHER STARTER AND PLACE THAT IN YOUR VEHICLE. PERFORM THE REPAIR SOON SO YOU DON'T DAMAGE THE RING GEAR ON YOUR FLYWHEEL. THAT WILL BE A VERY EXPENSIVE PROCESS FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE IT DONE AT A GARAGE.

if the starter is turning, but the motor isnt, its the starter failing to engage the flywheel. The rotation of the starter is supposed to force a gear forward to engage the flywheel, when that gear freezes up, the starter spins and the motor doesnt.you can try givinbg the starter a few sharp taps with a small hammer or wrench to see if it frees up

you have a fuel pump relay . Check to see if the fuel pump is humming when you turn key. check for proper ground for fuel pump. try spraying some carb cleaner into the intake then attempt a start. The engine will run for a few seconds, this will verify spark. corosion at the electrical connections is always a possibility. and lastly can you get the engine running by opening the throttle when starting?

mine also will quit going down the road, and idles high at times, or idles low, like having a mine of it's own. possibly idle air speed solenoid (which i replaced on mine) and still does this. another tech said only factory solenoid will "talk" to ecm properly?

1990 Cherokee starts but cranks for awhile

Try this: turn key on for 5 seconds, but dont start. turn it off and turn it on again for 5 seconds then try to start it. If it starts up better, you need to test the fuel pressure.
hook up a test gauge to the test port on the fuel rail, try to start and watch fuel pressure, after it builds.to its max turn engine off, it should then hold pressure for a few or more minutes. if it doesnt there are three things that can let it bleed down.

There is a check valve built into the fuel pump that could be stuck open,
An injector could be leaking,
Or the pressure regulator could be leaking.
If it still has problem check your spark plugs to see if they are worn out with too much gap.

1990 jeep cherokee starts but when you let off the key it dies already replaced thi ign switch

the fuel pump runs on 2 diffierint circuts. one when the key is engaging the starter motor when you are starting the engine, and the other is to power the fuel pump after you release the key when the engine is running. there is a resistor on the drivers side on top of the inner fender that you can over ride with a jumper wire to check. if it needs to be replace its about $5.00. (its a ceramic thing about 2 inches long and bout 3/4 inches square.

My 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee started perfectly yesterday morning. After stopping, turning off the car for about 5 minutes it would not start. I had it towed to a repair shop, where it started and all tests...

A definition: cranking is what happens when you turn the key, the starter engages and turns the engine. (term comes from when that was done with a crank that you stuck into the front of the engine to start it, before electric starters were invented) Turning over is the same as cranking. Starting is when the engine actually starts, even if for a brief moment.
Now...if the engine turns when you turn the key it is cranking. Was it doing that? If not, the problem is either in the battery, starter/starter relay or security system (sometimes) or the ignition switch. If it is turning and not starting, then the engine needs to be checked to make sure it has spark at the plugs, and fuel going into it. These problems are different ans some can be easily solved.

Trouble starting 1990 jeep cherokee

IF THE VEHICLES STARTER TURNS, BUT DOES NOT ENGAGE THE STARTER BENDIX IS THE PROBLEM. YOU CAN REPLACE THE BENDIX OR YOU CAN JUST GET ANOTHER STARTER. IF IT IS GRINDING AWAY AND NOT ENGAGING CORRECTLY IT WILL DAMAGE THE RING GEAR ON YOUR FLYWHEEL EVENTUALLY. REPLACEMENT OF THE FLYWHEEL WILL BE COSTLY IF YOU DON'T DO YOUR OWN WORK. ALSO TO REPLACE THE FLYWHEEL IS A LITTLE LABOR INTENSIVE AND REQUIRES SOME TIME TO COMPLETE.

I have a 1990 jeep cherokee and there is no gas getting to it

first, have someone turn your key on as you listen to the gas tank. you should hear a whirring sound that indicates your fuelpump is working. if not, check your fuses.2nd, change your fuel filter. good luck. if you don't hear any sound from your fuel pump and still after checking fuses, fuel pump may need to be replaced. good luck
