I took my car to get an oil change today and my mechanic told me that i needed a tranmission flush. I have 90,000 miles on my 2004 elantra. I have never gotten the transmission fluid changed before. I have been researching a transmission flush online and have found alot of contradicting information about it. Some say it's good to do but others say if you have never changed the transmission fluid before it could be dangerous to do a flush now. Any recommendations? Thank you

USUALLY YOU SHOULD CHANGE THE TRANY FLUID EVERY 40,000 MILES. MORE OFTEN IF YOU LIVE IN A HOT AREA LIKE PHOENIX ARIZONA. YOU COULD HAVE PROBLEMS IF YOU CHANGE THE FLUID NOW. IT IS KIND OF A GAMBLE. IF YOU HAVEN'T DRIVEN YOUR CAR HARD YOU MORE THAN LIKELY WILL BE FINE. A GOOD INDICATOR OF THE OVERALL CONDITION IS TO CHECK THE FLUID AND DETERMINE HOW BURNED THE FLUID HAS BECOME. GOOD LUCK.

I had a similar experience with a 1970 Plymouth Duster, at 10 years old (1980) I flushed the engine and started running a little bit higher detergent oil and it also started smoking as you described,turned out with the engine as clean as it got the clearances of different internal oil retaining parts such as valve guides and piston rings were slightly bigger causing my engine to smoke,
My Passat would run, then not start for a while, then run fine again. I told the mechanic it acted like old carburetor engines would when they flooded. Took him 3 days to find the problem. The oil pressure regulator was bad, making the pressure to high, causing the lifters to stay open. Had to change the oil pump and fixed the problem. This is a known problem with VW's. ONLY RUN THE RECCOMENDED SYNTH OIL IN THE CAR it makes all the difference
The best thing to do is check double check it yourself. Run the car up to normal operating temp first. Pull the transmission dipstick, with the car running, and look at the fluid. Check the level while you are at it. The fluid should look pinkish and should smell like oil. If it is more brown than pink or smells burnt then it should be changed. It doesn't need to be flushed.
GM recommends changing it every 100,000 miles except under hard driving, so if you chang3d it a couple years ago you should be alright unless you notice something wrong when you checvk it yourself. ope this helps.
vw group all say engine should be flushed at every service but owners are normally cheapskates(like me) and dont get it done(i do my own oil changes )your running problem has nothing to do with oil/filter/flush.get a computer diagnostic asap its easier than guessing...
hi did you get a solution for this? the same thing happened to me too.I had my oil change yesterday and today I saw the engine oil pressure lights come off and the oil started leaking very bad and the mechanic told me that the oil filter housing cracked.
abs, traction control, tire pressure monitor and fuel economy indicators all use a speed sencer in the wheel hubs, save yourself a lot of greaf and have a mechanic do a code read and test the sencers, i had the same issue and it messes up the whole system, i ended up replacing one hub assembly for about $190,
as for your transmission acting up, put the fuse back in and change the fluid, DO NOT HAVE THE TRANNY FLUSHED, JUST A FLUID CHANGE!!! if you want to drive another day. todays tranmissions are way more complex than they need to be and have many solinoids and sencers that can and do fail, good luck.
The only engines I have ever seen that needed to be "flushed" were engines that had used Quaker State oil for a long time. Usually about the only good way to tell is your engine is gummed up is to remove the oil pan of the intake manifold and see how much residue is built up in the engine. If your radiator has rust in it and the cap & gasget have rust deposits on them and or the overflow resivoir tank has rust in it thenn I would say to drain and flush the coolant system. If there is no rust, the coolant is the orinigal coolant color and the engine is not overheating it does not need to be flushed. Follow the reccomendations of the coolant manufacturer as far as to the length of use before draining and replacing with fresh coolant.
from what you are discribing the chances are your tappets at the top of your engine are tapping i will advice you tou get them changed the longer you leave them you will get more problems with your engine
