Question about 1996 Mazda 626

1 Answer

How do I relieve the fuel system pressure on a '96 Mazda 626?

As the first step in removing the transaxle, the Haynes Manual says "Revlieve fuel system pressure (unscrew gastank filler cap, remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse lock in the engine compartment, start the engine, run until it stops, then crank several times to relieve residual pressure)"
The engine compartment fuse block has several relays, none of them labeled "fuel pump relay." I guessed that the one marked EGI Main relay might be it, but when I removed it, the engine refused to start at all. How does one shut off the fuel pump, but still allow the engine to run long enough to exhaust all the fuel in the lines?

How do i replace the fuel pump in my 1998 mazda 626 LTD through the back sets or do i have to take the tank out

You will definately have to drop the tank. Remove gas cap to relieve pressure, then remove gas lines, gas straps, remove bolts, lower tank. Use only a BRASS punch and hammer and knock ring loose counter clockwise, then pump and sending unit will pull out. and you can disconnect and change your pump.
