Question about 2001 Ford Explorer
Transmision worked fine , just all of a sudden wouldn't go into reverse gear
Could be a loose wire. Check under the tranny and have a look for any loose cords or plugs

Some speed sensors will help the transmission know when to switch gears, but with some of the things you describe, sounds like after driving it that long, damage to the transmission has occured. Also, it could be a bad torque converter. There is also something called the transmission torque converter clutch solenoid, causes the car to buck and cut off. seems like your shift cable is disconnected , you might have hit it when you were working on the alternator just go back and re-trace your steps
