Check the transmission fluid to make sure it does not smell burnt and make sure it has proper amount in it and when was the last tune up done also check the level of the coolant because if this is low it will cause the transmission to get hotter

1991 Lincoln Town Car Signature V8 4.6L. Sounds like the starter is slipping. The car cranks and eventually starts after much clicking and then a sound like you get when you try to start a car that is...

The bendix in the starter isn't working as it should. The bendix pushes the gear up or out to engage with the flywheel, but the starter gear isn't fully engaging or going back in the down position completely. The starter is most likely your problem. The starter is good, but the bendix inside isn't.

For a 1991 lincoln town car are you supposed to put the drive lever in the position of the d with the circle around it or the large D. hope this makes sense

you will run it with the circle D,this is over drive for better gas mileage, and if your going down a hill or snow driving use just the D,this will help hold the car back

here is a step by step guide on how to fix it

If you do not wish to go through the hassel you may be able to find a set of clocks on ebay or your local scrap/junk yard and just do a streight swap and if you want set its Odo meter to match yours!
