Hi, there should be a fuse and a Starter Relay located in engine compartment, driver side, front side of strut tower, mounted in relay block on fender wall.

Different manufacturers use different abreviations for circuit fuses and relays, I recommend to check all of them.

Also, check if when key is in RUN, power is getting to the Starter Selenoid Mounted on top of the Starter thru the skinny wire (There is a FAT wire coming straight from the battery, that one is HOT at all times,) if power is coming in, REPLACE STARTER SELENOID, if no power present, REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH.

I've includded a troubleshooting chart, instruccions on how to replace STARTER SELENOID and some pictures to help you better identify and fix your problem. (I always think is better to have too much information than not enough) : )

Four types of starter motor are utilized depending upon the vehicle transaxle and assembly plant location. Manual transaxle equipped vehicles utilize a conventional starter motor which consists of a yoke, an armature assembly, an overrunning clutch assembly, a solenoid, a commutator end cover, a brush holder and a pinion drive lever. Automatic transaxle equipped vehicles utilize a reduction type starter motor which has, in addition to the components found on conventional starter motors, a reduction gear and shock absorber assembly.

In the basic circuit, the solenoid windings are energized when the ignition switch is turn to the START position and the clutch start/neutral safety switch is closed. The resulting plunger and shift lever movement causes the pinion to engage the engine flywheel ring gear. This movement also causes the starter solenoid contacts to close
.
With the contacts closed, the starter solenoid provides a closed circuit between the battery positive terminal and the starter motor. Because the starter motor is permanently grounded to the engine block, the circuit is complete and cranking occurs as soon as the starter solenoid contacts are closed.

When the engine starts, the pinion is designed to overrun and protect the armature from excessive speed until the ignition switch is released from the START position. With the ignition switch released, a return spring in the solenoid assembly forces the starter solenoid contacts open, breaks the circuit between the battery and the starter motor, and disengages the pinion. To prevent prolonged overrun, the ignition switch should be immediately released upon engine start-up.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the positive battery cable from the starter.
  3. Label and disconnect the solenoid electrical connectors.
  4. Scribe matchmarks on the solenoid and drive housing to ensure proper solenoid installation.
  5. Remove the nut and field coil lead wire from the solenoid.
  6. Remove the screws and solenoid from the starter.

To install:
  1. Lightly grease solenoid plunger.
  2. Install solenoid to starter aligning housing matchmarks.
  3. Install screws and tighten securely.
  4. Install field coil lead wire to solenoid and secure with retaining nut. Tighten to 89 inch lbs.. (10 Nm).
  5. Install the solenoid electrical connector.
  6. Install the positive battery cable. to the starter. Tighten to 89 inch lbs.. (10 Nm).
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

If you can jump it at the switch and get it to start, then the ignition relay must be working. It is hard to tell from your post but I think you are using power from another source to do this? I am thinking you have a blown fuse on the wire the furnishes power to you ignition switch.

Bypass ignition switch


The built in security will prevent you from bypassing the ignition. It's part of the anti-theft built in the ICU.

You say that it won't turn over? Can you hear a click when you turn the key to Start? If so, you may have a starter alignment problem. And since you've had the starter replaced, that would be a likely candidate. If there is no click, you may be having problems with the VATS. When you turn the ignition key to ON, is there a flashing warning light on your dash that says "Security", but it doesn't stop flashing? If so, the bypass that your husband referred to has failed. It is common practice to "bypass" only a section of the VATS system and believe you have gotten it all. Go to this link for info and the better way to bypass the system.

1997 oldsmobile 88 won't start the security light


Im guessing you tried to bypass the key in the ignition/steering column. This is ok unless the actual problem was in the TDM (theft deterrent module) In this case, the 2 wire bypass does nothing. There is another way to bypass this. Check out this link for tons of info and some DO IT YOURSELF options. Ive done several key bypasses and tons of full bypasses. They both work well, it just depends on what part is failing. I think you need the full bypass to eliminate that TDM.

Try to start 1991 camero and the security lite lights up. the car will not start.


turn the ignition on and leave it on for 15 minutes (not a misprint)-this is a failsafe way of bypassing the security system. Don't short change it, make sure it is OVER 15 minutes before you try to start it-the security light will go off. You are having a problem with the ignition switch not recognizing the resistance in the switch when the key is in anymore. you can bypass it if you remove the harness to the theft module and add a resistor to simulate the key. It is not as difficult as it sounds. Let me know if I can help more.

Okay heres what happen my chip in my key fell out so car wont start noter what doo I do


research vats bypass on google. I had to bypass, you simply measure the resistance through the chip, go to radioshack and buy the resistors that add to that amount or withing 2%. cut the orange wire that leads to the ignition and install the resistors bypassing the vats permanently.

I start my car but it immediatly shuts off and the theft sys light flashes could this light be the reason?


the ignition swith reads the key chip when key is turned, this is a common problem,the ignition switch will need to be replaced, after replacing the swith reprograming will be needed, to program you will need a battery charger to keep battery from going dead, after installing new switch,turn charger on, turn key to crank then release key leaving ignition on, you will see the dash lights, leave key on for about 15-20 min, until you see theft light go out, if light doesnt go out then repeat process,crank for 2 sec, then leave key on 15-20 mins until security/theft light goes out, hope this helps.

98 astro van horn blows when ignition key switch is move to the start position.


Do not replace the lock!
replace the ignition switch
the switch activates the starter then springs back keeping the engine running but, disconnecting the starter
repair the horn short circuit after this

Need to bypass triad security system - car wont start


There are several configurations of the same security system. But one sure fire way to correct this issue is to get a bypass kit. Any shop that installs remote startups has the ability to bypass this system. Since the sytem measures the resitance of the key/lock and asociated wiring any shorting of those wires will make it very difficult to defaet without some expertise.

Sometimes the remote atart kit also includes the bypass, so you can get two for one here.
