Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
The button on the shifter for my 2000 chevy malibu will not push in so i am not able to get the car out of park. what can i do to fix this? I have drove the car earlier today and it drove fine.
Some models have an electric interlock that is activated when you step on the footbrake of the vehicle..this must be done before taking the car out of park..if this is not so equipted it may call for removal of the shifter cover in the console and looking at the interlock mechanism for broken or jammed parts or broken springs and pins try wiggling the shifter while pushing in on the button and it may free up..good luck and repost please..thnx

I suppose its a sports mode function where the + enables you to upshift and the - to downshift.
Try using this mode when you are driving as you might like it if you used to drive manual cars before...

I had the same problem and once I wiggled the shifter enough to get it out of park then the key stuck in the ignition started.

SOURCE: Shifter stuck in park!
you have to take off the plastic all around the gear shifter. You can wedge a screw driver carefully around the edges and pry the plastic off then there is a screw on the shifter take that off and slide the top off and then take off the rubber until the whole shifter is exposed then you will see in the cavity on the right side a little metal round tab on a spring that you have to push in with a screw driver and it will release the shifter. Good luck

The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department
