Question about Lexus RX 300

2 Answers

LIMP MODE. Lexus RX 300. It is too expensive to fix so I am looking for a way to bypass the control that stops it going above 3rd gear. We have to restart the engine every time the car stops. Can we fit a switch to turn the computor of and on when the car stops instead of having to restart the engine. There are all sorts of sensors that kick in the limp mode and at Lexus prices it is not affordable to fix.

Thanks Frank, I think you are probably right and the computer is faulty. My days crawling under cars are over but if there was a waty to disconect the computer or reset it with a switch I would get this done as the car is otherwise in great condition.

SOURCE: xr6 going into limp home mode when car is turned

theres a solenoid that selects gears it can trick the gearbox into limp mode, id have that checked before spending big money i spent 6000 on a new gearbox (not standard price i had a heavily modified gearbox) because the standard gearbox did the same turns out it was an $80 solenoid, i found out after forking out the money. any ford dealer should be able to plug it in and run diagnostic checks for you

I just changed the knock sensor on my lexus rx 300 now the second and third gear dont have a smooth change also gear all of a sudden is not going into the 4th gear

Knock sensor controls ignition timing. It should have no control on transmission shifting. Did you disconnect/remove anything else to access the knock sensor? Was the battery disconnected? If so, a relearn procedure may be required for trans module etc relearn shift points while you drive the vehicle

I drive a 2001 lexus rx 300 car drives good but after a while when you get to a stop it will not go into the 4th gear you cut the motor off restarts it every thing fine till you stop again

stopping should put it into 1st gear not 4th .sounds like you need to get it to a transmission shop sooner than later it will only get worse

Why is my lexus rx 300 not going into gear 5

This could be caused by a variety of things.....but, coolant temperature is a significant input to the transmission control module for the overdrive gear engagement. If the transmission ECU determines the engine is not coming up to operating temperature, it will delay the engagement of the overdrive. There is also the possibility that the throttle position sensor has an issue as well....is the check engine lamp illuminated??? A scan of the engine control module and the trans module is in order....a good tech. will be able to discover the cause very quickly!

The blinking arrow is an indicator that the automatic transmission is in the limp mode. Sometimes this problem will go away. Other times you must take it in and have the error code on the transmission read. This will explain what is causing the transmission to go into the limp mode. The limp mode is the same as the WINTER mode where it starts in 3rd gear.
The dash board gauges are controlled by a dimmer switch that is above the rear fog light switch which is above the headlight switch. If this dimmer switch doesn't work, then have it replaced.

i understand why you want to do it yourself - it's expensive to have it done by a mechanic. that's because it's a major job to remove the engine, takes 4-5 hrs. i avoided having it done by having an honest mechanic i've been going to for a long time do something else (sorry, i don't know what) that fixed the problem temporarily. he told me it must be done after 90k miles or so, so i'm saving up.
