There is a shutoff relay activated by the key switch..it may need replacing,check with an auto parts store for model information and location

SOURCE: is there any way to test the injectors on my 98 chevy S10 4.3

DID you put in new gas, fuel treatment, new sock on fuel pump, all new fuel filters, buy inline fuel pressure gauge, check for codes?, this is not a carb where you pour fuel at it , do you have a repair manual for your truck and have you checked troubleshooting guide?

If you changed your plugs, etc. and know that you are getting a good spark then it's really only 2 other things to check. The compression in that cylinder and the fuel. Check fuel pressure with gauge hooked up to Schrader valve on fuel line next to your distributor ( it has a black threaded cap on it). If pressure is good then you have either a dirty or clogged fuel injector or the injector quit working. Let me know what you find. Anytime you get a misfire in a particular cylinder, you should always check for spark, fuel and compression.

Parked 1988 Chevy Celebrity in garage last night. Today it wont start. If I pump the accelerator a bunch it acts like it wants to start and as soon I quit pumping it just turns over. Fuel pump kicks on...


Hello: 1st, pumping the accelerator on a fuel injected GM car does NOT do any good. In fact if you put the accelerator to the floor you put the system in the lean mode ie, reduce fuel. You will need a fuel pressure gage and there should be a schrader valve on the fuel lines/fuel rail where you can connect the fuel pressure gage. The fuel pressure should be about 10 psi if you have throttle body injection. Is your car a 4 cylinder? If its a 4 cylinder you may not have a schrader valve to connect the pressure gage. You will need a high dollar kit to tap into the fuel line. Have someone attempt to start the car and you remove the air cleaner an see if the injector is spraying fuel.

Hi!!
If the starter cranks up, your problem is going to be the fuel pump. On the fuel line or fuel rail, by the injectors, there should be a small screw on cap (like the one on the tires), unscrew it to expose the Schrader Valve, just like the one on the tires. Place a piece of cloth in front of it, with a small screwdriver or similar tool, press the valve stem to relieve the fuel pressure, you should see a stream of gas coming out, If little or no gas comes out, have someone turn the ignition to the RUN position, DO NOT START THE VEHICLE, gas should pour out for the 2 seconds the pump remains energized. If gas comes out without pressure or no gas comes at all. Check Fuel Pump Fuse and Relay, if they are both OK, the fuel pump needs to be replaced. If when you press the Schrader Valve and gas comes out with full pressure, your problem will be in the electrical side.

theres a schrader valve on the fuel rail it where the injectors are press in valve stem it will spray gas if no gas check fuel pump operation start with fuses and relays also check for plugged fuel filter which is inline with fuel line in back of car in front of fuel tank

She cranks, then catches but will not stay lit. acts like there is no fuel, but there is fuel at the discharge side of the filter


you need to know how much fuel is actually getting to the injectors. if it's throttle-body injected you should be able to observe a basically uniform conical fuel spray from below the injectors in the throttle body. if multiport injected, you can't see injector spray, but you can attach a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve in the fuel rail to see if the fuel pump is putting out adequately. if you don't have a gauge, my favorite redneck method (this is technically a bad idea, so please use all common sense if you do this...no smoking, no open flames, keep all spark plug wires attached, etc.) is to depress the plunger on that schrader valve w/ a small screwdriver for about half a second; if you get pretty wet w/ gas then your pump's probably ok, but you might have a problem where the injectors aren't getting the proper signal from the computer

if you open up the hood and find your fuel rail you should see a little cap just like what is on your tire valve stems. take the cap off and push the little valve in the center agian just like the valve stem on your tire. be vary carefull as fuel will spray out of this. that is how to depressurize the fuel system

Ran out of gas now won't start


Depress shrader valve on fuel rail and see if pump primed,If primed take air snorkle from throttle body of and use carb cleaner to gett running,Some one can keep giming short burst or cleaner to thottle boby inlet till air gets out of system.Have seen this before.Air trapped in injectors.

Fuel pours into cylinders


very strange and rare problem. something is keping the injectors open instead of pulsing them. The command to ground the injectors comes from the PCM, Powertrain Control Module. It may be a good idea to pick up a used one from a salvage yard. car-part.com is a good place to look. You will need the info off your module to match up.
Do you have 2.0L SPI engine or 2.0L Zetec engine?

Mechanical Returnless Fuel System The fuel system consists of a fuel tank with reservoir, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel supply line, fuel rail, fuel rail pulse damper, fuel injectors, and schrader/pressure test point. Operation of the system is as follows (Figure 62):
  1. The fuel delivery system is enabled during crank or running mode once the PCM receives a crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal.
  1. The fuel pump logic is defined in the fuel system control strategy and is executed by the PCM.
  1. The PCM grounds the fuel pump relay, which provides VPWR to the fuel pump.
  1. The inertia fuel shut-off (IFS) switch is used to de-energize the fuel delivery secondary circuit in the event of collision. The IFS switch is a safety device that should only be reset after a thorough inspection of the vehicle (following a collision).
  1. A pressure test point valve (schrader valve) is located on the fuel rail. This is used to measure fuel injector supply pressure for diagnostic procedures and repairs. ON VEHICLES NOT EQUIPPED WITH A SCHRADER VALVE, USE ROTUNDA FUEL PRESSURE TEST KIT #134—R0087 OR EQUIVALENT.
  1. Located on the fuel rail is a pulse damper. The pulse damper reduces fuel system noise caused by the pulsing of the fuel injectors. The vacuum port located on the damper is connected to manifold vacuum to avoid fuel spillage in the event the pulse damper diaphragm were to rupture (the pulse damper should not be confused with a fuel pressure regulator).
  1. The fuel injector is a solenoid-operated valve that meters the fuel flow to each combustion cylinder. The fuel injector is opened and closed a constant number of times per crankshaft revolution. The amount of fuel is controlled by the length of time the fuel injector is held open. The injector is normally closed and is operated by 12 volt VPWR from the power relay. The ground signal is controlled by the PCM.
  1. There are three filtering or screening devices in the fuel delivery system. The intake sock is a fine, nylon mesh screen mounted on the intake side of the fuel pump. There is a fuel filter screen located at the fuel rail side of the fuel injector. The fuel filter assembly is located between the fuel pump and the pressure test point/schrader valve.
  1. The fuel pump (FP) module contains the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and the fuel sender assembly. The fuel pressure regulator is attached to the fuel pump in the fuel pump module located in the fuel tank. It regulates fuel pressure supplied to the fuel injectors. The fuel pressure regulator is a diaphragm-operated relief valve. Fuel pressure is established by a spring preload applied to the diaphragm. Excess fuel is bypassed through the regulator and returned to the fuel tank.

Electronic Returnless Fuel System The fuel system consists of a fuel tank with reservoir, fuel pump, fuel rail pressure sensor, fuel filter, fuel supply line, engine fuel temperature sensor, fuel rail, fuel injectors, and schrader/pressure test point. Operation of the system is as follows (Figure 63) and (Figure 64):

  1. The PCM commands a duty cycle to the fuel pump driver module (FPDM).
  1. The fuel pump driver module modulates the voltage to the fuel pump (FP) to achieve the proper fuel pressure. Voltage for the fuel pump is supplied by the power relay or FPDM power supply relay. (For additional information on FPDM operation, refer to PCM Outputs—Fuel Pump and PCM Inputs—FPM.)
  1. The fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor provides the PCM with the current fuel rail pressure. The PCM uses this information to vary the duty cycle output to the FPDM to compensate for varying loads.
  1. The engine fuel temperature (EFT) sensor measures current fuel temperatures in the fuel rail. This information is used to vary the fuel pressure and avoid fuel system vaporization.
