This is called a 2nd gear limp mode -- it is a safety devise in the computor to prevent interior damage to the transmission -- the cause could be a speed sensor or a blown rear low/reverse seal inside the transmission.

There is a similar issue on a 1995 GTO I am looking at buying.
Aparently the gear changes are not affected AT ALL, but the actual gear stick sits to the left and you have to 'feed in' gears.
He's been told that a new gear linkage (from a breakers) will solve the problem.
Is this the case?
And if so, are the linkages expensive, and how much labour (approx) to get my local garage to change it over.
