make sure that the witness marks on the cam and the crank are in sync with each other. then check for tdc on #1 and check the rotor position relative to #1 on the distributor and see if it mates. time the engine per the factory spec. the haynes manual will tell you all that if you get one from the parts store.

2.2L VIN 4 To Remove:

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Drive belt tensioner.
    • Alternator.
    • Power steering pump. Place the pump aside with the lines attached.
  2. Lift the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Oil pan.
    • Crankshaft pulley and hub.
    • Timing cover bolts.
    • Timing cover. If necessary, tap with a rubber mallet to loosen the cover.
  4. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing cover gasket.
    • Timing cover and the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 11 Nm (97 in. lbs.).
    • Crankshaft pulley hub and the crankshaft pulley.
    • Oil pan.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Power steering pump.
    • Alternator.
    • Drive belt tensioner.
    • Drive belt.

Camry timing belt


I am assuming you are referring to a 2.2 liter 5SFE engine. If so camshaft timing mark is dot located on forward face of sprocket mid spoke/or a notch on inboard rim of sprocket. locate mark and paint with white paint. Locate timing mark-small raised dot on plate behind sprocket at approx. one o-clock position paint this white for easy reference. Crank shaft sprocket has small notch on inboard rim. paint white for reference. align cam timing marks, then align crankshaft mark with #0 on timing scale. Adjust tensioner and belt is aligned. I recommend changing idler pulleys and water pump when replacing belt as preventative maintenance. Also inspect shaft oil seals and replace as needed. Performing these services now will save time and money in the future.

Hi,


It seems you are encountering problems trying to set the timing marks in your elantra,not to worry,simply follow the stepwise solution below;
Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] .

STEP 1. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.

STEP 2. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [8].Push tensioner pulley firmly against timing belt to tension belt.



STEP 3. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 43-55 Nm.


STEP 4. Except Matrix: Turn crankshaft one turn clockwise.



STEP 5. Matrix: Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.


STEP 6. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] .


STEP 7. Apply a load of 2 kg to belt at .Belt should deflect 4-6 mm. If not Adjust position of tensioner pulley.



STEP 8. Install components in reverse order of removal.


STEP 9. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [2] . Tightening torque: 170-180 Nm
(7) is timing mark on cam,pin mark to top,hole in spoke below pin mark lines up with mark on head (6) is crank timing mark,pin mark on crank lines up with markS on block.

The car ran great but the milage was up to change the timing belt i changed it and when i cranked the car up it misses and studders could i have been a half of tooth off


When you replace the timing belt, you need to line up the two dots on the gear sprockets the chain goes around. The top one (cam sprocket) should be straight down, and the bottom gear sprocket (crank sprocket) should be facing straight up, (facing eachother).
You need to take this back apart, pull the chain and sprockets off - put the chain around the sprockets after lining up the two dots. Holding them in place, carefull place them both into place (one at a time, but almost simultaneously) so they both go on straight. It takes a little patients and may take a minute or two, but once you have them on, and the two dots are lined up, you will be good to go. If the car seems a little off still, you can use the distrubutor (if equipped) to fine tune the timing ; as well as a timing light.

TIMING BELT CHANGE You should have some mechanical skills before attempting any engine maintenance! These are basic instructions, and you must knoe what you removed, when, and what order so you can reinstall them in order. First, you have to remove everything in the way! You need to remove the Fan, clutch, and shroud, pump pully & drive belts. Next, you need to remove the Crank Pully:

1. Crank Pully Bolt 2. Crank Pully 3. Center Bolt 4. 5mm Hex drive (used to remove pully bolts) Once the fan stuff, and pully(s) are removed, then you need to remove the Timing Belt cover:

Once the cover is removed, you will need to loosen the adjusting nut and pully bolt on the Belt Tensioner:
A. Adjust Nut B. Pully Bolt C. TENSIONER PULLY Once the the Adjust Nut, and Pully bolt are loose, move the pully as far towards the water pump as possible.
Then, you can slip the timing belt from the sprockets. Check the tensioner for roughness and excess play! DO NOT MOVE THE CAM OR CRANK SPROCKETS! IF you do, then you will have to line up the Crank and Cam for piston number one at Top Dead Center before placing the new timing belt on! Note the timing marks on the crank and camshaft sprockets. IF YOU MUST! Allign the Cam and Crank at piston#1, Top Dead Center before removing the belt. Each sprocket has a small hole, with a line through it, and there is a small groove or "V" it alligns with on the engine. Now, once the timing belt is off, look at your new timing belt. Older belts use the Squared off teeth, while new ones have the rounded teeth. Make sure you have the correct belt for your sprockets! Never reinstall a belt that is in questionable condition. BELT WEAR CONDITIONS
If there are Arrows on the belt, they must be pointing to the RIGHT when you put the new belt on the sprockets. If there isn't one, then paint one on, and place the belt back on the sprockets. The arrow will indicate to a mechanic, this is the way the belt must be put back on (if they replace any cam or crank oil seals). Slip the new belt onto the Crank sprocket. While maintaining tension on the side of the belt opposite the tensioner, slip the belt onto the Camshaft sprocket. Releace the Tensioner adjusting nut to allow spring tension against the belt. Temporarily reinstall the crank pully, taking care to align the notch in the pully with the raised area on the sprocket. Rotate the crank clockwise two complete revolutions. Recheck the alignment of the of the valve timing marks. If they do not align properly, loosen the tensioner, slip the belt off the crank pully, align the timing marks, reinstall the belt, and check alignment again. Tighten the tensioner nut, then the bolt. Reinstall all parts removed, in the opposite order, of course. Start the engine and allow to reach normal operating temp, then road test. THEORETICALLY, you should simply be able to replace the belt with the new one, and go, as long as you did not move any of the sprockets when removing or installing the belt. Most people do it this way, and do not test for alignment before replacing everything. When the belt wears, timing will be off, very little, and this is why you check alignment. The belt may have slipped a tooth, making the timing off. This is why the Cam and Crank sprockets must both align properly. An experienced person will do just that: Replace the belt, and go. It really isn't all that hard. It helps to have a second person around with some experience also.

YOU NEED A REPAIR MANUAL.BECAUSE THERE IS A WHOLE LOT OF PARTS YOU HAVE TO REMOVE TO GET TO THE TIMING CHAIN.YOU NEED PHOTOS TOO SEE HOW TO SET TIMING MARKS ON CAM SPROCKET AND CRANK SPROCKET.

For all timing belts you should start with the crank sprocket pointing at TDC and the cam sprockets pointing at their designated marks.

You should be able to mark the old belt and and put corresponding marks on the cam and crank pulleys, then remove the old belt and transfer the marks to the new belt and install it.

Personally I would buy a manual as this would provide you with a step by step guide to performing the repair.

I am not positive that this is an interference engine, it looks like it is to me. If you are not accurate in your timing you will cause severe engine damage.

You said you changed the ecm module, is that the ecm or the ignition module. Do you have access to a scanner to check cranking rpm? That way you can test the new crank sensor and the wiring and the ignition module.
