You should have the compression checked to see if the cylinders are in good shape. When a deisel starts to use oil, it burns it as it would fuel. The mot test is o/k because your emission system is working well. Hope this helps.Moe

I would go with a cylinder leak down test. Sounds like bad rings, if the valve seals are good. Personally, I would have parked it At 30,000 and figured it out. Got to carboned up good by now and don't know how you could ever pass inspection unless your in a state that doesn't do emission testing. Did you check mfg bulletins? What's with the clunking any ideas?

Start by pulling the spark plugs and inspect them for evidence of oil burning. They will be particularly black and some may even be oily. Finding several oily plugs is better than finding one. Also stop to run your finger in the end of the tail pipe, black sooty is normal, black oily is not.
If you have several plugs that are oily, you may have a valve seal oil leak issue. This is can be an expensive repair depending on how it is done. Most shops will remove the heads and work them on a bench. These can be done on the vehicle with the right procedures.
If you have only one that is oily you may have a broken oil ring in one cylinder. This will require complete disassembly of the motor to verify the broken ring. At this point you are basically rebuilding the motor.
