Fuel heater fault. there is a heater in line with the with the glow plug wiring ing heats the fuel for a good fire. when engine temp get to normal it turns off. if not working the engine just floods. folloe the fuel line till it goes into the cacing and look round that area for some were coming out that will be were the heater is.

SOURCE: VW passat glow plug problem

Yes you have a defective glow plug relay if you have your owners manual you can find it and replace it, the unit also has a timer on it, if you don't have a book look for the glow plugs and follow the wires from the glow plugs to where they terminate there you will find the relay unit and replace it, to test the glow plugs you remove the wires and test each plug by pulling off the wire and with a cheep ohm meter touch one end to the glow plug and one end to ground if it swings almost al the way over it is ok, if it dos not move then that glow plug is bad. if you find 2 or more bad then replace them all, and if a glow plug has shorted and caused this problem you will have to replace the glow plug relay. Good luck.

SOURCE: 02 VW Jetta TDI with ALH engine glow plug

this is a common problem for these cars glow plugs go bad like spark plugs however the smoke would lead to bad mass airflow meter. it is not telling ecu corrcet miss. disconnect mass airflow meter. when cold see if this makes it start better. it should would means you need new m.a.f. glow plug issue take a test light place clamp on positive of battery then pull off glow plug connectors place tip of test light on glow plug the bad one will have a dull light unlike the good one which will be brighter. will need new plugs and wire harness four **** connectors and wire striper and crimper will fix concern good luck

You most likely have no injector pulse, this is caused by a bad cam sensor,or pick up coil,or crankshaft sensor.

My 2003 Audi V6 turbo deisel has difficulty starting mostly in cold weather. Once it gets going it starts easily but it's a drain on the battery so I carry a re-chargable battery with me.

Try turning key to on position for 15-20 seconds before attempting to start that should give the glow plugs enough time to warm up there for making it easier to start

Have you checked the firing to ignite the fuel? Aside from timing, the proper heating of a glow plug is important to ignition.

Hi,
If you plan on keeping the van with the 6.2 diesel, My recommendation would be to by a Haynes Manual for the 6.2 Gm Diesel engine.
You have a glow plug controller, ( back where the distributor used to be ) a temp switch in the passenger side head, a couple of relays, and the glow plug themselves. The glow plus are along side each injector, about the size of a pencil with a wire hooked on the end. The injectors can be found by tracing the STEEL linens along side the valve covers. The Haynes Manual for the diesel gives a simple step by step guide to trouble shoot the glow plug system. A simple dc volt meter is all you need and a few tools. To copy that for you here would take many pages then you would have to print them out to take to the van. So hopefully you can afford to buy the manual. It will make your life way easier.
I have owned 6 of those engines. I love em'.

My 2006 xlt deisel 6.o engine, cranks real fast umumummumumumummmmmmmmmm but it does not seem to be firing ccertainly won't start.

Check all of your glow plug wires, if they are all on it may be your glow plugs or your fuel pump, glow plugs are cheap and dont cost much and are easy to replace. fuel pumps are not cheap and are very complicated to replace. I hope this information helped. Be careful and drive safe!

Car has trouble starting when temp is below 50 degrees, starts fine in warm weather summer months.

I would get your engine temperature sensor checked out, this tells the E.C.U how much fuel to supply to injectors, (if a deisel then check operation of glow plugs )

Hard starting diesel, at approxamately anytime temp gets below 45 degrees F. runs rough when started, smokes, then once warmed up no problem. Has quit on me twice in traffic.

only 2 things can maake a diesel run rough at start up ,,1--- air in the system 2----- 1 or more of the glow plugs not working. this sounds like the latter ,if you have a couple of glow plugs not working ,it will miss on those cylinders until it warms up ,and the smoke is mostll exesive fuel when it does fire . recommend you check the glow plugs
