its a 4.6 an nothin else is broke so guess ill push them back in or hammer them in n put it together n see if they fall out again

  • xkikbxr Jan 18, 2013

If you are talk about the 4.6L engine with Overhead cams. One side is spring loaded while the other side sits on the lifter. Here is a you tube video to watch. Look at the rocker arm carefully, make sure the spring isn't broken or it will never stay...You should never force or hammer these as it will only cost you more money in the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbqKWzhps...

yea this is a 4.6 with overhead cams. i put new lifters in n it wasnt that because the rockers just went right back in with all kinds of slop .the springs dont look broke so not sure wat it is now .was hopin to have it runnin by now

  • xkikbxr Jan 24, 2013

If it were me I'd be pulling the rocker arms again and make sure that all shims are in the right places an make sure everything is torqed to spec. I'm be inspecting the arms for excessive wear also. Could be a weak sping on the arm too...just some thoughts.

Why did it fall off?? Not know what size engine, I'll assume a 5.0 v8. If the rocker arm fell off then I would assume the rocker arm support gave way. You could be lucky and no other damage was done, but in order to see if things broke in small pieces you'll have to remove the valve covers and see what's missing and what's not. You'll have to drop the oil pan and clean all the metal out of it and you'll have to flush the engine oil system to remove all traces of metal shards. It could be considered a winter project if you're a DIY'R. If you take it to a dealer, you may as well buy a crate motor for it and if you take it to a local shop, PLEASE, PLEASE, make sure you can trust him. But even at a shop if done the correct way, at least $2000.

Need to know valve adjustment for 2012 ram 3500 turbo deisel and do you have to adjust the exaust valve n if so what is the spe. Tk. Joey

The 24-valve overhead system is a "low-maintenance"
design. Routine adjustments are no longer
necessary, however, measurement should still take
place when trouble-shooting performance problems,
or upon completion of a repair that includes removal
and installation of the valve train components or
injectors.
(1) Disconnect battery negative cables.
(2) Remove cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
(3) Using the crankshaft barring tool #7471-B,
rotate crankshaft to align damper TDC mark to
12:00 o'clock position.
(a) If both number one cylinder rocker levers are
loose, continue to next step.
(b) If both number one clylinder rocker levers
are not loose, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees.
(4) With the engine in this position, valve lash can
be measured at the following rocker arms: INTAKE
1-2-4 / EXHAUST 1-3-5. Measure the valve lash by
inserting a feeler gauge between the rocker arm
socket and crosshead (Fig. 32). Refer to VALVE
LASH LIMIT CHART for the correct specifications. If
the measurement falls within the limits, adjustment/
resetting is not necessary. If measurement
finds the lash outside of the limits, adjustment/resetting
is required.
VALVE LASH LIMIT CHART
0.152 mm ( 0.006 in.)
MIN.
0.381 mm (0.015 in.)
MIN.
0.381 mm (0.015 in.)
MAX.
0.762 mm (0.030 in.)
MAX.
note:
If measured valve lash falls within these
specifications, no adjustment/reset is necessary.
Engine operation within these ranges has no adverse
affect on performance, emissions, fuel economy or
level of engine noise.
(5) If adjustment/resetting is required, loosen the
lock nut on rocker arms and turn the adjusting screw
until the desired lash is obtained:
² INTAKE 0.254 mm (0.010 in.)
² EXHAUST 0.508 mm (0.020 in.) Tighten the
lock nut to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and re-check the valve
lash.
(6) Using the crankshaft barring tool, rotate the
crankshaft one revolution (360°) to align the
damper TDC mark to the 12 o'clock position.
(7) With the engine in this position, valve lash can
be measured at the remaining rocker arms: INTAKE
3-5-6 / EXHAUST 2-4-6. Use the same method as
above for determining whether adjustment is necessary,
and adjust those that are found to be outside of
the limits.
(8) Install the cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
(9) Connect the battery negative cables.

Ticking noise while in drive getting worse, been told that noise coming from bell housing?

Valve Adjustment

Print
The 4.2L and 5.3L engines do not require a periodic valve lash adjustment.
The 4.3L engines are equipped with screw-in rocker arm studs with positive stop shoulders. Because the shoulders that allow the rocker arms to be tightened into proper position, no adjustments are necessary or possible. If a valvetrain problem is suspected, check that the rocker arm nuts are tightened to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). When valve lash falls out of specification (valve tap is heard), replace the rocker arm, pushrod and hydraulic lifter on the offending cylinder.

Ryobi s430 replace timing belt

the ryobi s430 has a hole in the timing wheel with ,perhaps a red mark on it or next to it like mine.lining that up with the piece at the bottom that goes straight down puts the cam lobes right at 180 degrees away from the rockers and readies the valvetrain for the compression stroke.if you remove the valve cover, which by the way has a really tough reusable gasket, youll see the cam and rocker arms.you want the lobes of the cams to be as fara away from operating the rocker arms as possible.next, you ll find top dead center to be not quite lined up, with respect to magneto edges and flywheel magnets.using a tiny screwdriver, you can put the tip in the spark plug hole not quite an inch and rotate the flywheel SLOWLY.being careful not to somehow allow the screwdriver to become pinched between the piston and cylinder(that spark plug hole is at a funky angle)at some point, youll fee fell the piston approach top dead center.youll notice there are a few degrees that the flywheel will turn before the screwdriver will fall back down, indicating travel has begun toward bdc(bottomdead center).you want the crank asembly to be set in the center point between when the screwdriver stops rising out of the spark plug hole to the point it just starts to fall back in.that should be close enough.my problem now is getting the timing belt OFF.mine is bad and I've torn down all the way past the flywheel.at this point,i can see the timing belt, but now there's this pressed bearing in the way that ive yet to figure out how to remove.viva la ryobi

I have a knocking noise coming from the front of my 3.7 liter engine on my 2004 Jeep Liberty have a check engine light with code 304 the knock sounds like tap not fast during idling the sounds gets a...

I HAVE SAME JEEP SAME PROBLEM...I have found out after research that all these jeeps like yours and mine have a common problem with engine clogging and the valves sticking and the rocker arms coming off.....This is true I pulled my valve cover off and the rocker arm had come off because the valve was stuck ....Pressure between the rocker and the cam and the valve is the only thing that will keep the rockers from falling off......And when the valve starts to stick the rocker falls off.....This is sad but true.....Also it is badly clogged with black chuncks of burnt oil....I dont know what causes this other than the wrong weight oil....but I only used the wrong oil maybe 2 times...
There should be a recall on these because the rocker arms shouldnt come off.....I think the rockers are wrong from the factory....I am a level 2 chrysler tech.and also ASE certified.......It makes me angry that they built these so weak !! ....All you can do is remove the heads and have a complete valve job done and clean the oil pick-up tube in the oil pan as well....then a complete engine flush..
.....ONLY use 5w20 weight oil also........If you dont have the cash dont tear it down cause I almost guarantee you have the same problem as I.............Hope this helps.................Metalpoet

The same rocker keepts falling off just had both heads done i replaced lifter on this rocker and sugestions

Thanks for your reply. It's a little unusual but I have seen this happen before. The nut that holds the rocker arm is worn out. I believe if you buy a new nut it will solve your problem. You will probably want to get it from the dealer to be sure you get the correct part.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE STICKY LASH ADJUSTER(LIFTER)..MANY MILES ON IT?HAVE YOU BEEN GOOD TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER?TRY CHANGING THE OIL AND FILTER AND ADDING AN OIL SUPPLEMENT ..IF THIS DOESN'T WORK,YOU WILL HAVE TO ISOLATE WHICH BANK OF ENGINE NOISE IS COMING FROM,REMOVE VALVE COVER AND YOU CAN TO SEE WHICH ONE(S) ARE MAKING NOISE..PUSH DOWN ON EACH ROCKER ARM..A BAD ONE WILL BE SOFT..A GOOD ONE WILL BE HARD..NO LASH..TO REPLACE..YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFT BOLTS AND ROCKER SHAFTS..YOU CAN PURCHASE ONLY THE ONE(S) YOU NEED..BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFTS..THE LIFTERS CAN FALL OUT..GET A STICKY GREASE TO HOLD THEM IN ROCKER ARMS DURING REASSEMBLY..I HOPE THIS HELPS
