SOURCE: 1997 ford contour transmission over drive light

The first thing you need to do is get the tranny power flushed.
And not the aerosol cans of flush you buy at the parts store.

Don't go to AAMCO either.

Certified transmission or a reputible service garage can do this. It averages about $160. The contour uses a CD4E series automatic 4 spd tranny. It has a history of overheating. It was used in the Contour, Mystique, Ford Escape, Ford Probe, Merc. Cougar, Mazda 626 and MX-6, and Mazda Tribute. all had the overheating problem that cooked the tranny fluid. They run hot.

The overdrive light starts blinking I bet when you drive it on the interstate at highway speeds for about 5 or more miles... then it shifts real hard (whiplash effect). Turn the car off and reset the transmission controller and the light stops, and it shifts normally... this doesn't fix the problem though.

Primary solution is to flush the tranny. You have to do this to save whatever life is left in the transmission clutch disk/packs.
The CD4E does not have a filter in the pan, but a screen. It's located on the front of the transmission, not the bottom. The pan is hard to get at and is easier to do if you remove the tranny from the car. .

As i said, have the tranny flushed, then, pick up a good "stacked fin" oil cooler from your parts store. They run about $70 for a good one. If you get the tube/fin ones, they average about $30 but only cool half as much for the area they take up.
You can get a used one out of the early model ford Explorers (92-94) with automatic transmissions. They run about $5 to $10 at the junk yard.

Find the Transmission cooling lines going into the radiator tank and using a mini pipe cutter, cut the return line that goes from the radiator back to the transmission about 6-12 inches back from the tank. Get some heavy duty rubber oil tubing from your auto parts store and divert the output line to the cooler and then back to the tubing that hooks to the transmission...
You can even add an externally mounted oil filter, like the one used for the engine, next to the cooler giving you a great way to maintain your transmission even longer. A filter you can change like your oil filter.

Either way, you'll cool the fluid properly and extend the life of your transmission. The blinking light is a warning, like your check engine light, to get you to check the transmission... ie... I'm running too hot!!!

The car has an automatic transmission and all of a sudden i had no reverse had no slipping or nothing the drive gears work fine no slipping grinding nothing shifts through all gears just fine

It may just need servicing/adjusting.

Your reverse gear is actually first gear ... when you select reverse another 'cog' fits into the toothed wheels to change the direction of first gear ... to give you reverse...

It may be a sticky valve or just a bit of adjustment (workshop job..) that is required.

What you can try ..

Start the car ... move the lever through all the positions several times (foot on brake..). Keep your foot on the brake and then put it in reverse and rev the car. Hard!

Try doing it several times.

An auto transmission works on valves opening and closing. Reverse gear - in comparison with the forward gears - is seldom used. The reverse valve can 'stick'. Try forcing it to open ... frighten it ... but keep your foot on the brake...

1997 jeep cherokee just started while wife was driving it kicked into passing gear and you have to rev high to get it to shift then once in high gear if you press on gas to much it kicks back into passing...

well disconnect it, and make sure tranny end is full 100% retracted
now drive, does A/T work good and not kickdown now.
yes, then the cable is bad , rusted ,frayed inside or sticking.
easy test ,huh?

Truck lost power and when you try to pass a car it slows down and chuggs

Stop trying to do what you are doing!!! Sounds like the transmission is slipping when attempting to downshift, and engine is over-revving!! Check the transmission fluid level and correct if needed. If fluid level is correct and fluid smells burned, suspect transmission has internal problem.

1994 nissan altima sometimes sluggish at take off, high rpms when changing gears

This sounds like a slipping transmission , check the fluid level first and make sure its full, if its full then you have ****** problems and may need to have ****** rebuild done,

Another thing is to make sure the trans passing gear cable is connected at the throttle where the gas cable is.

Transmission Slipping?

Putting it in four wheel drive does not eliminate the transmission. Honestly, it sounds like the transmission is on it's way out. A 4l60e in one of cars was acting the same way. It required a rebuild.

If the trans.oil is dark brown in color and smell's burnt your tranny is probably on it's last leg.If tou have bad pump pressure or low oil you will have to rev the eng to get it to build enough pressure to move.Your detent cable or kick down cable is for passing, when you step on the gas when passing someone this cable is pulled causing the trans. to go into a lower gear and when you let off the gas it should shift back into a higher gear.if it's out of adjustment it will kickdown to soon or to late.If your car has alot of miles it may be in need of a filter and fluid change, but usually when slipping occures its to late and you will need a replacement tranny.Hope this was helpfull.

2006 chrysler 300 transmission slips

Low on transmission fluid. The tranny fluid can only be checked by Chrysler, there is no dip stick, because you have to know the motor temp to be able to know where the fluid should register on the dip stick. Crazy!
Its not slipping now, but shifts hard. Has to be looked at by Chrysler again, but its done this since Ive had it, so I didnt realize it was a problem....
