Question about 2000 Volvo S70
It really depends on what's causing the misfire. Spark plug is cheap, a couple of dollars, a bad plug wire couple of dollars, Coil pack,$100+, a bad injector $100 +, a bad cam lobe $1500 - $2000. You really need to have it diagnosed by a pro. Dies it happen when it's wet out or does it happen all the time? If you're mechanically inclined, I'd say new plugs, wires, remove and clean the coil packs be sure to sand off any corrosion and rust off of all mating surfaces for these Even the lips of the bolts that secure them down to the engine block....I had my own experience with this on my wifes Saturn just about a month ago.

volvo is a great car and usually very reliable, the blacl smoke is from too much gas or not enough spark, check to make sure all the brake lights in the rear work,if a bulb is out it could trigger the ABS light, have one of the bigger auto stores scan the car for you and get back to me with the codes, we'll go from there please rate my fix as i strive to be the best Ray

SOURCE: ENGINE MISFIRE AND SHAKING
check your wire harness on the top of the engine. Volvo must have bought harnesses from Mercedes. The insulation just cracks and disintegrates, then the wires short. Not good for an ignition system.Once they short It can fry the circuit for that cylinder in the computer. Does not set a code other than Misfire.

Re: 2000 Volvo S40 L4 1.9 Liter L4 1.9 Liter Turbo FI
Are you consider yourself a handy person?
Swap the coil and see is the misfire going to follow to another bank of cylinder.
You has total of 3 coil in your engine.
Do a detail record map and switch the two coils.
A replacement aftermarket coil is oil $46 w/one year warranty and $55 will get you a life time warrent coil.
Do the swap and see what happen.
A leaky/failing injector can also cause the same problem.
Do a Chevron Techron fuel injector clean ran and highway ran.
