On the Citroen Picasso the speedo is just dead and from time to time it flickers on and then goes dead again

run the fault codes as these items get the message from a sensor in the transmission.

Speedo dead, makes noise, bounces? what? stuck high? what?
odometer dead.
CEL glows running, the check engine light glows, running
and you insert the 1cent paper clip in the DLC connector and you get
code flashing. code 24, VSS dead?

if yes, the cable has snapped. (fell off at either end)
if not VSS dead, then the speedo is dead
if both odometer and speed are dead and VSS are dead the
snapped cable, or cable fell off rear of speedo head.
if VSS is not bad. (no 24s)
and only speedo is dead but , odometer is good
then that means the actual speedo clock inside the head is bad.

to repair a dead speed/cluster, you replace the whole head
if real frisky then you do this.
suzuki even sells new clocks, but are very expensive
what i do is find a used head. and use that. (car-parts.com) or at fleabay.
sometimes i mix 3 heads to get one, good head.
that is all you can do, on old cars unless rich, and $200 head is pocket change.

look at the dash board in front of you the left button where the speedo is push and hold clock will flash use the right hand stalk to rotate the time and date

two things could be wrong ,one is bulbs have gone
two the clock its self have packed up

How fast is too fast? If it's within 10% that's probably as good as you will get without taking it to a specialist.
You can try to calibrate it by taking the speedo needle off and moving it very slightly forward of back but it's risky and hard to get right. I got mine to just under 10% doing it this way.

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.

and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.

easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.

my wild guess, is this car has advanced cluster design.
all 100% electronic with "CAN-BUS" controls.
so in most cases of that if ONLY speedo is dead, then it is.
if VSS is dead, scan the cars PCM, if mph vss is flat lined
the Speedo and the odometer goes dead.
the VSS is what increments the odometer. (like a clock)

Does the brake pedal pulsate? You may just have warped disc brake rotors.

Bad ground wire?

Your speedo cable is about to fail and should be replaced soon. Also check and make sure that no tranny fluid is being deposited inside the drivers side carpet. When these cables fail they sometimes spiral the fluid up trhrough the housing.If you are somewhat mechanically inclined this job is not to difficult to do. Thank you, Dana
