Question about 2001 Hyundai Sonata
I initially started out with this problem.
-rough idle (fluctuating RPM)
-loss of power
-a loud sound of muffler like a performance exhaust ( right before I could no longer drive it 'cause it would not stay running)
original diagnostic by reader:
-P0101, P0102, P0200, P0300, and P1516.
I towed it to the Mechanic ( I'm overseas, I regret not taking it to the dealer) Their diagnostic was loss of compression on one side of the engine (yes all 4 cyl) by more than 100 PSI difference from the other side) and they advice me to take it apart to find out what was causing it maybe it could be something as simple as a head gasket. After gutting it out they found out that the piston rings were stuck and the cylinder walls were still ok. So i purchased an overhaul kit: gaskets, pistons, rings, oil pump, timimg chain and gears, lifters, spark plugs, wires, etc. After everything was put together i continue to get the code P0102 and i forgot to mention smoke from the oil cap as well as the dipstick, prior to the rebuild it was sputtering smoke now is steady but it is also building up pressure, because when i took the oil cap off it had pressure. Now the "mechanic" has exhausted all his knowledge about the problem and now i have to take it somewhere else. unless i could get some good advice from here. Thank you in advance for your response.
The following day after i posted my problem.. My MECHANIC figured it out.. of course it took some tidius troubleshooting and a couple of burns. Needless to say, I finally give it up to the backyard mechanics.. they were great.. not even the real professionals that were consulted could figure it out. the problem was a "blocked catalyc converter".. hence why only one side of the engine blew the piston rings. .. what a relief.. in this case it's only going to cost me less than 50 dollars. Thanks anyways.. I hope this posting helps someone the headaches and troubles I had to endure.. Excellent site.
