It uses a speed sensor in the transmission instead of a cable.

My transmision slips and the speedo quits working at the same time in my 1998 mercury sable

Hello wsarah03,

There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle, that is a good place to start. The VSS tells the powertrain management system when and how to shift the transmission and also gives the speedometer it's signal.

From your description that the speedometer quit working at the same time I would suspect the a faulty VSS.

Regards,
netvan

Looking to find the cable in my car to the speedometer

Your car's speedometer is electronic. It doesn't have a cable, it has a speed sensor, which is located at the left rear lower side of the engine compartment, on rear side of the transaxle.
It will have two wires, one is gray with a black stripe, the other is pink with an orange stripe.

Location of transfer case for a 1998 honda civic

There is no spedometer cable. It is electronic. There should be a speed sensor on the top of the transmission near the back side. Two bolts hold the sensor to the tranny and there should be three wires coming out of the sensor on a plug.

Check the transmission fluid first. it sounds like one of the clutch plates is sticking.

If you shift into second after you've stopped, can you get the car moving?
