Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 292000 miles. Runs but will not drive in any gear. Selector will go into hear but it wont move. It can be pushed while in neutral. Was told transfer case was bad but even when transfer case is in neutral it still wont move. Is it something in the transfer case or a torque converter issue?

Could be either, a transmission problem or transfer case problem.
Someone will probably have to remove the transfer case to find out.
The torque converter, pump, valve body, or various parts in the transmission could have failed. The transfer case could be stuck between 2wd and 4wd or could have a broken gear.

I put it into gear and can hear gears turning in the transfer case but no movement from the rear output shaft. Thinking it would be in the transfer case then? Possibly that viscous coupler?

I would agree the problem is in the transfer case.

SOURCE: Torque converter problem??

I would check the transfer case. The transmission is shifting manually thru the gears okay. The transfer case 4x4 module is not communicating to release the case so the vehicle will move.
Make sure all the fluid levels are full.

SOURCE: where is neutral safety switch 95 jeep cherokee

Your switch is on the passenger side of the transmission opposite where the shift linkage goes in on the drivers side.It takes a bit of careful prying and wiggling and some solvent to get most to come off. after removing the hardware that holds it on. The switch goes for about $200 but can be taken apart and cleaned...unless the contacts are really burned it will generally work after that. make sure that you keep it flat when taking it apart because stuff inside can fall out easily. Put dielectric grease in there before closing it up.Can't help with schematic...the ones I have I wouldn't wish on anyone. (terrible)

Jeep was doing ok ,as i came up our mountian i felt two or three small jerks, when i was close to the top it just would not go forward anymore,i tried every gear drive 1st,2nd and reverse,I also tried...

it sounds like your automatic transmission quit his job. How much miles are on the clock? If more than 150.000 and you pulled trailers, climb mountains etc. this will be the first choice. Let the engine idle, push the brakes and check if the car will go in any gear. If this will happen only in reverse gear, your auto trans need to be replaces. You can use a rebuilt auto trans.

Rear drivers side window inoperable.

if you don't hear the motor it's probably got a short or bad switch. If the motor runs and the window doesn't move you have a damaged gear.

Shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.
