Question about 2001 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab

2001 nissan frontier wont shift gears when running but will when its not running

The other night my truck just all of a sudden wouldnt shift gears. I was in 5th gear and tried down shifting to 3rd and it was almost impossible to get it into 3rd gear and it made a grinding sound. Now it will start in nuetral but you cant shift into any gears. It starts in 1st gear and runs fine but will not shift from 1st. It will shift into any gear while the truck is not running but thats about it.

SOURCE: Hi my problem is with my 2001 nissan maxima SE

Check the simple things first like your clutch master cylinder fluid level and slave cylinder operation transmission shifter bushings. If it is hard to get the car moving the clutch could be slipping also check your transmission and engine mounts.

SOURCE: Transmission issues with 3rd and 5th gear

It's weird but it's the problem!!! There is a switch on the transmission near the selector, usually only affects 3rd gear!!! The switch is being distorted after repetitive battering with gear selection!!! I have experienced it and also read about it in australia on a Navara!!!

SOURCE: 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V clutch sticking and hard shifting

I am dealing with a very similar issue on my 03 Spec V , So far i noticed the clevis pin was loose and the locking hitch pin that slips thru it had fallen out . this caused the gears to not wanna engage due to the bolt behind the clevis which runs to the master cylinder was not getting pressed in when i pushed the clutch pedal in because the clevis pin was slippin on n off giving me no pressure up top .. I had to remove my lower dash panel in order to get visual n hand access to this pin , it is a tight spot to work in as well . May be easist to remove the 4 14mm bolts that hold yur driver seat in to give ya more room to work n stretch out ur arms

My car doesnt come out of 5th gear. At first it wouldnt come out of 3rd and when i tried to put it into 4th it wouldn't go in at all but it did go into 5th and stayed there. What the problem?

pull the gear stick out of the top of the box by undoing the turret section and look at the selector rails and gate
if you can move them with a big lever ok then check the pivot of the gear stick
if it is a column shift operation then check all the linkage and bushes and adjust any that need it

Sounds like you have worn gearbox selector linkages and I suggest that you get someone to take a look at them PRONTO.

Take out your middle console and watch your shift cables as your shifting, you may have something stuck or maybe your shift cable bushing has broken. So i would just take the console out, and try shifting in all your gears. And then you will most likely find out what your problem is. :)) Good luck. Hope this helps. I have a saturn too and I LOVE IT!!! Good choice of a car!!! James Booth

92 chevy s10 4x4 4.3L manual transmission no 3rd gear

Hi:

Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse

If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.

Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear.

I had this exact problem on my 2005 5.3L Suburban... It would shift into 1 and 2 and reverse, but not 3 and 4.

I took it into a transmission shop, and he said the 3-4 shift solenoid was burned up. Wanted 1500 to fix it. Far from home, so I have to pay it.
