You'll have to take it to a shop to have the light reset.

Check engine light on for 2004 vw bug engine coolant low possible thermostat issues'

If the coolant level is the problem, the engine would be getting hot. If it is getting hot, add coolant and check for leaks. Use your owners manual maintenance chapter.
if the engine is not getting hot, the thermostat is stuck open. If your husband cannot find the thermostat by himself, I recommend you go to a shop. You have to be a good mechanic to replace a thermostat properly.

I have a 1998 vw new beetle. The check engine light came on and not sure why. The car seems to be running fine. Last week we replaced the tensioner pulley and a new belt. Now I have the engine light on....

Some auto parts stores scan check engine lights for free. If you can get the code, and tell me what your engine/trans is in the Beetle, I can help narrow down the cause of the check engine light.

2004 new beetle: engin light comes on during acceleration and noise around valve cover. Compression check provides 180 to 210 PSI. Dip stick indicates oil level full.

There will be a code stored if the light has been activated, it is guess work without the code.

VAG have numerous common issues (BUT STILL A GREAT CAR)

Get the code, let me know what it is then I can advise the cheapest route to take

Kind regards
