Question about 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

1 Answer

My SUV makes a grinding noise and has a burning smell when I lift the hood. What could it be and how would I repair it?

1999 Isuzu Rodeo LSE V6 2WD. The sound seems to either be coming from the fan or the belt and metal wheels behind the fan. The check engine light is on, but it comes on at times and usually goes off. The last time it made noise I added antifreeze and it stopped (?) but now a different grinding is back.

Take the belt off, and see if that pulley wheel spins freely, If it is seized up, that is where the burning smell came from-belt was running across the seized pulley. If that wheel pulley runs the water pump, you will need to replace it.

I was almost certain it was one of the pulleys but I wanted some more thoughts. It turned out to be the idle pulley which has been weird since I got it. It was grinding and when I turned it, it seized up. I also replaced the worn belt and now the check engine light is off and for the the first time, when I stop at a light I have to check and make sure the thing is still on. It idles so quietly now. Thanks for the reply.

SOURCE: Cruise control & check trammission light comes on my 2001 Rodeo

I had that problem too and the issue was a loose wire connecting the engine control modude to the crankshaft sensor switch. The engine control module does not sense where the crankshaft position is when the wire moves, and that causes things to go snaky, such as the transmission and cruise lights coming on. This issue took a good mechanic in Syracuse one and a half weeks to find. Total cost was $425.00,$395.00 for labour, and $.99 for the new wire. Good luck!

SOURCE: I have a 95 Isuzu rodeo. The engine makes a loud,

ATTENTION!! Do not run the engine if you do not want to have to buy an engine!! I just solved this problem with my own 95 Rodeo the problem you are having is common on 95 rodeo with 3.2 L engine. Failure of the hydralic timing belt tensioner will allow the tensioner pulley to knock against the top of the tensioner unit ( inside timing cover lower left side of crank pulley little cylinder looking part ) held in by 2 bolts when you take it off if you can depress the button its bad . Dealer has part for $110.00, so go to auto zone but they dont have it listed for 95 rodeo have them look up timing belt tensioner for 95 honda passport $76.95 takes 2 days VDO (Vendor Order only) not a very hard job have fun dont forget to change the timing belt and water pump for good measure after the complete job is done you should not have to worry about it for another 70,000 miles.have a good day

Noisy breaks

Grinding noise from brakes is no pad left and the metal is grinding away the disc rotor. I suggest you take it to a brake shop and have them physically check both in and outside pads on both wheels.

My SUV sometimes makes a scraping noise when I start it. Could something be loose on the starter? How would I repair it?

sounds like your starter is getting bad. If the starter was recently replaced or taken off, it may need shims. Sometimes even when a starter is new, it may still need shims to line the teeth up with the flywheel teeth. If your starter wasn't touched, than it is starting to go. It's the pendex in the starter. Hope this helps. If you're changing it yourself and need help, I can walk you through it. Cheers from Nova Scotia!

Auto Trans.and manual Rodeo has no dipstick. Fluid levels must be checked from underneath the vehicle on a lift at the shop. It can only be filled from underneath the vehicle as well.
