Hi there,

Many dodge models actually have two o2 sensors. I'm not sure if this applies to your model. If so, one is on or just downstream of the exhaust manifold. The other on the outlet pipe of the catalytic converter.

The PCM compares the readings and adjusts the fuel/air mix to keep the catalytic converter operating at max efficiency.

A malfunction in any portion of this sub-system could cause your symptoms. So let's run a test on the o2 sensor(s).

  • You'll need an Ohm Meter.
  • Be careful when doing this. If the lead wires on the sensors are damaged, the sensor will likely malfunction. Locate and pull the electrical connector from the o2 sensor.
  • Attach Ohm Meter leads to the terminals.
  • It should read 5 to 7 Ohms
  • If not, replace them
Keep in mind, these symptoms could also be caused by many other things.
  • Timing
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Bad gas
  • Clogged catalytic converter
  • Cracked/bad distributor
  • Plug wires shorting against one another
  • Weak spark
  • Rich Air/Fuel mix
If your vehicle has OBD (On Board Diagnostics), you can narrow down the problem by checking for trouble codes.

To do this manually, get a pad, a pen, your keys and get in your truck.
(the procedure for entering diagnostics may vary, but this works for the dodges I've worked on)
  • What to expect: On your dash there is a CHECK ENGINE or MALFUNCTION light. It will blink to signify the digits of any error codes. The codes have two digits with a pause between them. Blink-Pause-Blink-Blink would signify a 12.
  • To enter diagnostics: Turn the ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (within 5 seconds)
  • The codes will begin to flash
  • Write them down.
Of course, its easier to go to an auto parts store that offers code reading service.

Question: Of all the possible causes, why did the o2 sensors get picked as the cause? Is there more to the story?

Any way, run the tests, perform the diagnostics and get back with me, we can go from there.

still sounds like the timing belt/chain to me,especially since it just shut off goin down the road, had a 93 that did the same thing,dodge has a kind of safety switch that if the timing belt breaks the engine will shut down to keep you from tearing anything else up.

I had same problem on mine. The wire harness under the throttle body cover rubbed and was cut in two. If you remove the cover and unplug the etc you can feed the harness under the plug wires to inspect them.very common problem on this vehicle.

I also have an '03 Ram 1500 with the Hemi, and I too noticed that the throttle system definitely sucks. The issue lies with Chrysler opting for speed density instead of mass air flow, which is what the Hemi should have. I landed an a chatroom that had a procedure to try to fix the throttle response. Simple procedure.
1. turn the Ram on, but don't start.
2. wait 7 -10 seconds for onboard diagnostics to cycle and finish.
3. press the accelerater to the floor, using moderate leg speed and then let up.
4. shut Ram off, wait 10 seconds.
5. start up

After using this procedure, my Ram finally accelerated like a Hemi Ram should. The chatroom said that for some reason, this won't work on every Hemi Ram, but since you don't hook up into the computer, it's worth a shot.

Would the electronic distributor pickup cause a vehicle to spit,sputter and cut out at a high rate of speed ????


First you can not put Bosch plugs in it. Also watch cheap wires from parts house. Also check fuel pump pressure at high speed. Also watch for Catt converter plugging. Try unscrewing up stream o2 on both sides then drive. If goes away plugged Catt. You can scan those and see fuel values. Then you can tell. Any codes?

My 1990 Chevy k1500 5.7L It will hesitate,spit,sputter even stall. I did a full tune up new spark plugs/wires, cap/rotor new VSS, fuel filter, put good gas in it, injector cleaner in it. Help


FUEL PRESSURE MUST BE IN THE 35-45 LB RANGE TO OPERATE PROPERLY. CHECK YOUR FUEL PRESSURE AND THEN FUEL QUANTITY BEING DELIVERED. YOU MAY HAVE A FAULTY FUEL PUMP WHICH IS VERY COMMON

A bad fuel pump may cause a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9l to run for a few minutes and just shut off without sputtering. It can also be that the fuel pressure regulator (on top of fuel pump assembly) is stopped up. 98 dodge ram 1500 the truck idles funny and spits and spudders and misses when you give it gas. if you put it in drive and give it gas it does not go anywhere it backfires out the exhaust and intake. But...


Code 1683 is for a problem with the EGR solenoid which controls the EGR valve, and code 597 is for the IAC valve not being able to keep idle speed at the correct setting.
A leaking EGR valve could cause the symptoms you describe.
I assume you looked at the cap and rotor and they are ok.

I just replaced my radiator on my 2003 dodge ram 1500 4.7L and now my truck sputters and has a hard time going up hill or even with slight steady acceleration, it shakes badly until i let off the gass and...


did you get any coolant on electrical connections as in throttle body,mas connections. check those for moisture and air dry use dielectric grease when reconnect to repel any moisture in future. go through and dry all plug connections, if you can also dry under the dist cap. I use start fluid for cleaning and drying moisture as it evaporates then use dielectric grease on all connections.

You need to get the codes read to verify,but i think your in need of coil pack or wires.
