Runs rough and smells of fuel after washing engine!

Just bought a vw for my daughters 21st and washed the engine, after that it would not start, now it does but has a smell of fuel, runs rough and has no power. This a 96 vw Golf with 1.4 8 valve petrol engine AEX.
I changed the plugs, checked the leads which are new, the dizzy is new. There does not seem to be any smoke from exhaust, it has a blowing sound as though the exhaust was blowing but there is no problem that I can see with the exhaust. I do not have a compression tester. I am flumuked at the moment so any help would be really appreciated.
Car was running fine prior to washing the engine.

I have a 01 Ford Escape and it runs perfect unless it gets cold/rains and sits for over 24 hours without running. It feels like I have moisture in the gas and the problem is temp fixed when I put the product Heat in the gas which is a form of alcohol that gets rid of moisture in fuel. I have not washed the motor so you can rule that out. Help!

Don't "wash" the motor, like you wash the outside. Did you pressure wash it? God people are too freakin anal retentive and go screwing up their engines. Next time use engine cleaner and try not wet any wiring harnesses or anything electrical. You probably killed a sensor connection or something.

You might want to take your ride to a garage and have them hook it up to a computer. More than likely the problem will be the ignition coil/coils.

Why does the engine of my 1998 Chevy Cavalier z24 start rough when cold?

It sounds like your fuel filter is clogged, or the fuel pump is failing. I would change the filter first and see if that does it.

I have a 1995 Mercedes Benz SL 500 that runs rough when started after sitting for several days.

hi Jhlightcap.

The Common Problem: Rough Running Engine

A properly-operating engine should run smoothly and without excess noise. If your engine starts operating in a manner that gives you the perception of "running rough", it is likely due to a handful of common causes. A mechanic would investigate these common causes first in order to rule out a simple explanation for the engine's unsatisfactory operation.
The common causes for rough running in an engine are:
  • Engine miss
  • Vacuum leak
  • Dirty fuel injectors
  • Carburetor problems
  • EGR valve
  • Ignition coil
  • Spark plug wires

My intrepid runs rough when starting up smells like gaswhen warmed up it runs ok?

Your Car MUST be Completely INSPECTED for FUEL LEAKS as this IS OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS and a Fuel Leak Can RESULT in a Catastrophe, as for the ROUGH Running the Fuel Smell Can and Likely is RELATED to this FUEL SMELL you have. ALSO if your CEL (Check Engine Light) is on this will Lead you to the Most Probable Cause of your Problem.

Starts runs than shuts off after replacing ignition wires and bat

The light with the key through the car is the immobilizer. When you changed the battery it must of screwed it up. You will likely need to tow it to the dealer.
