Will a van start without the steering column locked?

Do you mean it won't crank at all, or cranks but does not start. If the first, turn on headlamps and try to start. Do headlights dim? If not, you may have bad battery connections, bad solenoid, bad neutral safety switch. If lights dim, bad battery, connections, solenoid or starter motor.

Flashing battery light on 1992 Chevy Astro

There are a few different things that can cause your problem. When the problem is occurring, disconnect the alternator plug, start the engine and measure voltage with a voltmeter. Connect a test light to 12V, reconnect the alternator connector and back probe the brown wire with the test light. Check to see if the alternator charges else, replace the alternator. Also, you may have a faulty instrument cluster. If you need more help on how to repair your alternator I would suggest checking out this sites HowTo section http://www.buyautoparts.com/howto/

1998 chevy asto van wont crank or turn over

Turn the headlights on and watch them while the key is turned to start. If the lights go out, one of your cables or connections at battery or starter is not good. If lights dim a lot but stay on, possibly a bad starter, it needs testing. If lights aren't affected by cranking position, turn lights off, pull the small wire off the starter solenoid, hook up a test light to ground and to the solenoid wire. Light should come on when key is held in crank. If it does, likely a bad starter solenoid. If no light, then the start circuit from ignition switch to starter solenoid is not working. Check for power out of ignition switch on the start wire with key in crank, to begin with. If powered, switch is good, need to check if neutral safety switch is good, and then check or swap in a new starter relay.
Post back with any results.
Good luck.

My van was running and it just turned it self off now it wont start again it just clicks in the fuse pannel

Are your headlights bright or check voltage ar battery with lights on or with someone cranking engine. Cranking not below 10.5 volts. If it is replace battery.Remove terminals on battery and clean. Now go into fuses and replace starter relay with another one in box it usually says spare or remove the same one from another circuit and try cranking engine if it cranks replace relay if it doesn't have someone try to start it and you hit the starter with a hammer hard a few times while it's being cranked if it cranks all of a sudden the starter has a bad armature and needs to be replaced

The light for my odometer screen no longer works. Im assuming its a fuse problem. Where in the van would i find the fuse box? And where to buy the replacement? I bought my van used with no manual.

It is not a fuse problem. if that light is blown, and the rest of the instrument panel works, you will have to replace the instrument cluster in order to recover the light.
