I have a Ford focus estate 1.6 zetec engine. The problem happens intermittently whilst driving. Can you tell me the exact location of the speedo sensor and give any help on how best to change it. Thank you

The management light isn't coming on maybe because it only happens intermittently - a second or two at a time.

Our 2003 Ford Focus 5 speed did not pass a smog check. It came up with the code of P0720 Output Speed Senor CKT Malfunction. Where is the output speed sensor on my car and can I change it?

if it loses the signal 3 times in one drive cycle (approx 30 miles) the light will come on, the sensor is located on the outside of the transmssion case, change it at the risk of throwing away $30-50 if u guess and you are wrong, go to a Kragen auto and have a trouble code test run and see if there are any pending codes, a pendin code will not turn on the light.

It is most likely the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) It is located on top of the gearbox. I changed mine - it was a pain....It depends on how tight it sits. There is a pin securing it. I would let ford do the job....
If you decide to do it yourself prepare it with rust loosener - (WD40 is not good - it is a lubricant and not a rust loosener) several times in the days before the "operation". When you remove the old VSS take som fine sandpaper (grinding paper?) and use it in the hole where you fit the VSS. This makes it easier to pop it in.

It can also be the little wire that runs where the sparkplugs are located (Dont know the word for the location) The wire must be insulated so that sparks cant jump from sparkplugs to the wire.

Speed sensor would usually cause hesitation aswell, could be the start of your clocks failing, you can get it plugged in to check this as it does have its own fault memory.

It could be a spark plug, plug wire, or a coil. Sometimes thay break down intermittently. If it needs a tuneup, that would be the first thing to do.

Speeddo drops to zero

I had exactly the same problem on my 2001 Focus 1.8.

Solution: a new VSS was fitted (costs about £30) plus garage costs. It is a DIY job if you dont mind getting your hands a bit dirty and should only take 30mins to do.

If its just the speedo failing and the rev counter works ok, its likely to be the speed sensor which is on the gearbox. This will have to be removed as soon as possible to avoid engine damage! Expect to pay about £30-40 not £128 like some have paid from a Ford dealer.

The speed sensor as well as talking to the speedo to say how fast youre doing also talks to the fuel pump and adjusts the amount of fuel to send to the engine according to the speed your doing. So, if it thinks youre doing 0mph, it will supply a minimum amount of fuel and is likely to stall when slowing down. You might notice a lack of power whilst the speedo is failing as its starving the engine of fuel, causing it to run a lean mixture, which also burns hotter and could overheat and damage the engine.
