Question about Toyota Yaris

Open Question

I have an '08 Yaris, and the windows have been fogging up way more than normal this winter. Also, it smells funny. I've heard this might be the heater core. If so, any chance it's under warranty still? Can a regular mechanic do this or should I go to a dealer?

SOURCE: windows fog up,small anti-freeze smell

The early sign of a heater core leak is the smell of coolant, the reason is that only vapor is leaking now, it will gradually get worse in most cases and coolant will start comming out the heater box condensation drain.

SOURCE: Heater Core Leaking

you could quick fix! but you will have no heat, 1st under the hood, look at the back of motor, follow all you're radiator hoses, take two hoses off the heater core stick a pipe that is big enough then clamp the pipe down. to both sides of hoses to the pipe you will eventually have to replace heater core!!

SOURCE: coolant smell in cab, no wet spots inside of cab.

It could be, but your best bet is to remove the instrument panel, pressure test the cooling system then see exactly where the leak is coming from. You may end up just replacing the heater core and the hoses for insurance. I believe you'll need to remove the panel to check the connection anyway, so you might as well replace it all while you're back there.

SOURCE: Last winter I had the heater core replaced in my

Core should not become obstructed that fast unless the engine has severe internal rust. You can remove the heater hoses at the engine and flush through the core (in both directions) using a garden hose. Likely though you have a problem with a blend door or actuator which unfortunately requires heater box removal (big job)
Hope you are lucky with that one and it does not need that.

Ac compressor making loud noises and my instrument cluster all of a sudden quit working

Get out your owners manual and locate the power relay for the AC and remove it, this will stop the AC clutch from engaging the compressor, note, AC is used in winter to help remove moisture when defrost is on you may have to roll window down to prevent fogging, also check for blown fuse in manual bet you find one for instrument cluster, good luck,Bret

Windshield and driver & passenger windows fog constantly. this is a new problem

its normal if in recirc. mode. or not normal if stuck there.
the heater core is leaking engine coolant (funny smells)
for defrost mode is bad. , due to inop. dampers.
if heat is good to other ports. , then its damper failure.
the FSM covers the tests.

I have a 2009 lincoln town car, past 2 weeks when it rains my windows fogs up, sometimes it clear but comes back again. No smell.. what should I do?

Its normal for your windows to fog in rainy weather. If you defroster won't clear it up, then your heater core is leaking, which will just make more moisture on your windows due to the steam. Feel around the passenger side floorboard and see if its wet, and check your coolent lvl to see if its starting to get low.. odd tho, usually you will smell the sweet smell of antifreeze, but maybe its just starting to leak and its not really pouring out YET.. Warning, as time goes by, leak will get worse.

1994 Caprice LS. Little to NO heat.

It will be the heater core. If you can smell it inside the car and it's steaming up the windows the core will need to be replaced. Remove the heater core housing and check to make sure its leaking from the core itself. You might get lucky and have a leak from the hoses running to core instead. Hope that helped.

Front window defroster note working

Was there a smell along with it fogging up the window like antifreeze? If it did the heater core is leaking and needs to be replaced. It will be kind of a sweet smell.
