SOURCE: I have a 1994 chevy k1500 4x4 and need to change pitman arm

Take the bolts out that attach the steering box to the frame and pivot the box so you can fit the puller on.
Leave the steering shaft and power steering hoses attached.
Mark the new pitman arm and old one in the same place and mark the pitman shaft to keep the same position of the new pit man arm on the old shaft as the old pitman arm.

SOURCE: replace idler arm/pitman arm

Don't worry it is not too hard if you keep at. One "special tool" that you will need is a ball joint separator to separate the ball joint on the idler arm from the steering. When changing make sure to compare your replacement parts with the original and if necessary make a diagram of how things go together. On the bottom, there is a castle nut and a cotter pin. Remove the pin and loosen the nut then use the ball joint separator to remove the idler arm. (This is the hardest part of the job.) Then remove the remaining bolts and take the part off. Before putting the new idler arm make sure that you put the new grease fitting on it (and go ahead and squirt a little grease in it even though it already has some) and in between the new ball joint and the steering there should be a plastic bearing that slips into place. It's a pretty straight forward job and once you take a good look at it you will see what all needs to be done. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Goodluck!

You'll have to rent or borrow a pickle fork and a pitman arm puller. There is more than one size of pickle fork so specify for tie rod ends. You can buy them too, about $100 for the pair and they are not vehicle specific.
Jack and block up your front end so the wheels are clear. Take the nut off the tie rod end and wedge the pickle fork between the tie rod and the drag link, rap with a hammer until it separates. Loosen the bolt on the collar and unscrew the tie rod end. Count the turns when you remove it and screw the new one in the same number of turns.Fit it into the drag link and tighten the collar and the new nut.
Take the nut off the idler arm and use the pickle fork to separate it from the drag link. Unbolt the idler arm from the frame. The new one goes on in the reverse.
You'll probably need an adjustable wrench to remove the nut from the pitman arm,it's bigger than most wrench sets. Separate it from the drag link first. Slide the puller on and tighten it up. Once it starts to turn hard, give the bolt on the puller a rap with the hammer and tighten some more. Repeat until the arm comes off. Slip the new one on and tighten.
Don't be shy when you tighten these parts because if there is play, the holes in the drag link will oval out and you will have to replace it too. Don,t use a pickle fork on the pitman arm or you will have to replace the seal in the bottom of the steering box. Hope this helps.

Seems like you are doing what you can. Why not disconnect the pitman from the truck and drop the steering box with the pitman arm on it? Although there is a cost for another pitman arm, you risk damaging the steering box components by beating on parts like the pitman arm that connect to the steering box gears and bearings.

If you are missing work and have extra costs, replacing the pitman arm may be a cheaper alternative.

How to change the pittman arm and idler arm on a 1999 S10 Chevy Blazer 4x4?


Pitman arm requires a pitman arm puller, and a tie rod seperator or "pickle fork". Remove the cotter pin on from the joint on the pitman arm and center link, then remove the nuts from both ends of pitman arm. Use the pitman arm puller to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear, then use the tie rod seperator to remove the end from the center link. Reinstall and retighten nuts, do not leave out the cotter pin.
Idler arm will require tie rod seperator. Remove the cotter pin from the end at the center link, use the tie rod seperator to seperate the joint there. Unbolt the idler arm from the frame, and remove. On reinstalling remember to install a new cotter pin. It would be best to have the front end alignment checked after replacing these parts.

You could have a worn idler arm and pitman arm. The idler arm is more common to wear out before the pitman arm so start with that and have the front end aligned. Inspect all your front end steering components for damaged and worn out parts that need to be replaced.

What I think you are referring to as the pump is really the steering box because the pump doesn't have an arm connected to it. The pump has 2 hoses and a belt going to it. From what you describe it sounds like you need a pitman shaft seal. The seal is replaceable but you will need a pitman arm puller to get the pitman arm off. If you don't have or can't get a puller don't even bother starting the repair, as you WILL NOT get the pitman arm off without one. When you get the pitman arm off clean out around the shaft and you will see a snap ring. Remove the snap ring. Now make sure the power steering is full of fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way one way or the other and hold it there while increasing the RPM. Doing this will literally "BLOW" the seal out. There will be a couple of spacers and maybe another seal that come out of the hole also. So read the installation instructions that come with the seal kit and it will have a picture of where the components go and in what order they go in. Don't forget the snap ring. When done replaceing the seal you have to center the steering box. From all the way one way turn the steering wheel all the way the other way and count the turns. Now turn back the other way half as many turns and the box is centered. With the tires pointed straight (not turning) the pitman arm should go right on. The pitman arm will go on the pitman shaft in 4 different places. So if you don't center the box and the wheels you might have say one turn to the right before the steering wheel stops and three turns to the left. With all this done fill the power steering with fluid. With the front tires off the ground and the engine NOT running turn the steering wheel all the way from stop to stop 4 or 5 times and then check the fluid again. Fill the fluid and turn wheel from stop to stop another 4 or 5 times. Doing this will "bleed" most of the air out of the system. Now start the engine and turn wheel from stop to stop a few more times to "bleed" any remaining air from system. Turn off the engine and check fluid level. Hope this is helpful.

I ned to know / see the diagram of the 2000 2500HD chevy pu . I need to get the parts for a friend he was told - he needs the pitman arm and idler arm I have not seen the truck yet but would like to see...


napa online lists two pitman arms for $49, $89 depending upon spline count. As a photo wont give you this info, it may not help...As far as I can see, they list the other components as well but I didn't look at prices. To remove the pitman arm you will need a good pitman arm puller...some of the larger parts houses rent them out. You will not get it off the steering box without one!!

Pitman arm failures


I have heard of the Factory Pitman Arms Busting But, NEVER a Moog! I think that 4 Wheel Parts has a Warranty on these Kits...Am I Correct???? You had to have gotton a Bad one from the Kit. Moog or 4 Wheel should Replace this Arm! Please Rate My Response! Thanks!
