Yes, that was too much. The neutral safety switch costs around $70 (if I remembered right). I bought it from my Mazda dealer and asked them for a diagram to locate it. In most cases, my Mazda dealer has been helpful in provide diagrams for this minivan. The switch is located underneath the battery (you'll have to remove it) on the transmission. Make sure it is aligned right when you replace the switch; otherwise it won't find neutral, and you'll have to use the bypass switch on top of the steering column to start you engine.

MY 2004 KIA SPECTRA WONT START UNLESS ITS IN NEUTRAL

Parking switch damaged. The two starting positions P and N both have a separate safety switch which allows starter motor to crank only in these two positions.
Replace the "Parking Starting switch".

My mazda MPV 2000 wont start. I was starting the car in neutral for about 2 weeks, and about 3 times I started it doing a bit pressure from "neutral" to drive, but now nothing works. I still...

I had the same problem a month ago. my van would not start at all. I replaced the starter and ignition switch and still does the same thing, but when I replaced the neutral safety switch,it has been working ever since. Try replacing the neutral safety switch. it's located underneatht the battery. I paid almost $70 dollars from the dealer.

Try starting the car in neutral. Keep your foot on the brake and put on the emergency brake and try to start it in neutral instead of in park. The vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch which does not allow you to start the car in reverse or any of the drive gears. You can only start the car in park or neutral. You may have a problem with the shifter or the shifter cable. On some vehicles the shifter cable can be adjusted.

Mazda 2000 mpv will not start in park but will start in neutral why?

The most likely cause is a bad neutral safety switch. It should be on top of the transmission. Follow the shifter cable through the firewall and the switch will be near the end of the cable

There is a safety neutral switch that will only allow the car to start in park and neutral. If it starts in other gears or Not in park, then switch needs to be replaced

Replacing neutral safety switch on 2000 mazda mpv

ALLData.com probably has the best info for your MPV. I use it for my 2000 MPV and it hasn't failed me yet. Mazda wants $250 for a shop manual and Haynes hasn't written one as of yet. My MPV right now won't come out of 2nd gear because of (I'm hoping) a bad PRNDL Range Select Switch.
