Then prindle needs to be changed. every expolrer is known for this problem. in the 20 plus years i worked for them i have changed thousands of them

if you are stuck in gear it is not a basic rebuild but a bad rebuild
because of the design of the gear selection process , it is impossible to have 2 gears selected together as one selector shaft will not move unless another selector shaft is in the correct position ( neutral ) to allow the detente balls to move out of the way so the next selector shaft can move
it is possible that the gear stick is not in the correct position when it was installed back onto the top of the box and one gear was selected and the end of the lever came out of the selector slot or all the selectors were not in the neutral position and so the end of the lever went behind a selector rail
pull the gear lever turret of the top of the box, move the selector rails until they all line up as a slot across all of them , then put the gear lever end back in that neutral slot

Why has the gear stick all of a sudden become very loose and doesn't select the right gear?


You've probably disconnected one of the selector cables. They position the gearbox selector arm and need to be tensioned correctly.

Hi i have a pajero 3500 V6 2000. Manaul gears only change to 1 and 2 gear wont go to the other gears. What can the problem be Thanks


1st and 2nd gear are on the same selector rail and if you cannot move the gear lever across the slot that means that the selector rail has not been correctly positioned and the interlocking pin between the rails is not allowing them to move . I suggest that you remove the gear lever turret from the top of the box and see where the selector levers are . With your problem then one rail should be out of alignment with the slot of the other gears .If you have had the box apart then the problem is in the fitment of the selector rails.

If third, forth, and fifth work OK then there could be a selector problem. Does the gear stick go into the correct position? If so then selector and or other internal problem which will require removal

2004 F-450 power stroke diesel, sometimes it won't turn over when you turn the key. It has a automatic transmision,if I shift it to drive then back to park,it will usually crank.Once it cranks and runs it...


It may be a fault with the gear selector ignition isolation switch on the side of the transmission. As a safety measure the vehicle cannot be started when the gear selector is in anything other than park (maybe neutral). If the linkage between the gear selector and the selector switch on the transmission is a bit slack or the switch on the transmission is faulty the ignition might be disabled as it assumes it is actually left in gear. Check the this selector switch and the shift linkage to it. I think the fault might be easy to correct with adjustment, clean up or exchange

Gearbox linkages are in and will not select a gear


Hi,

Make sure they are syncronised correctly and that non of them have too much movement in either direction.

Also ensure that the linkages are not crossing over up to the gear lever selector or on the gearbox selectors.

Gears won't go to correct letter but work?


you can remove the instrument cluster trim and see where the selector needle is,below that you will see a string or a wire that moves it when you move the gear shift,i believe there is an adjustment for this on the steering column in the area of the selector needle.

Automatic shifter light burned out


I've done this many times. First grab the shifter and pull up with everything you have. It will come off if you pull hard enough. You may have to use 2 hands and a couple of legs to get it off the first time. After is is off, simply use a screw driver and pry out the trim piece with the letters on it, you know the D,R,N, 1, 2.... The light is under it, so simply untwist the bulb holder to undo it. Ensure you align the notch for the correct gear. You'll be able to tell if you are in Park and your gear selector says Neutral. After you put the trim on, just put the selector knob back on with a sharp blow with your fist.
