Maybe check to see if the neutral safety switch is malfunctioning. there should be an adjustment on the top of the transmission that is a small L-shaped bar that moves. If it is not adjusted correctly, the shifter may be in park, but the actual transmission may be between park and reverse, thus making it not register that it is in park and the neutral safety switch engaged to say it is safe to start.
If the shifter is on the column, try holding up on the shifter just a little as you try to start it, if this seems to work, that transmission linkage needs to be adjusted. Also try to start in Neutral, if this works, which not always on some models, then most likely is the linkage needing to be adjusted.
To clarify - the engine cranks then starts. If it won't crank in any gear, I would check the neutral safety switch first. You can also jumper the starter solenoid to make sure the starter will crank the engine manually without the circuit from the key switch.
When you say you replace neutral switch, the one on the left side of the transmission? Nuetral and park,Once they are selected it gives a ground to the starter relay. If anything park gear on the nuetral switch isnt getting switched to ground. This can be in the transmission
Then the problem is likely the ignition switch, or the neutral safety switch. Try jamming it into park a couple of times to see if it helps. If it does, you will need to change the neutral safety. If it doesnt, probably going to need an ignition switch. Those trucks, jimmys, and blazers are famous for ignition switch problems.
96 Plym. Gr. Voyager (same as Dodge) 4speed A/T can't locate neutral safety switch on drivers side front of trans. My book shows different location/picture (Haynes manual). Any ideas where to get picture/diagram for reference? Initial problem van starts normally but often only clicks when key is cycled through start cycle until it finally starts. Battery good (3 yrs and checked good), replaced ign. switch behind key tumbler assembly(NAPA Echlin part), relay at fuse block in engine area a checks OK with VOM meter, next item is neutral safety switch that also runs backup lights. I've opened area by removing air filter assembly for better view from top or under car but my switches are not in same location as Haynes book shows. Van has towing package and lockup torque convertor if that makes difference. Need source for diagram of trans exterior. Tha nks to all you helpful souls!
make sure battery is fully charged push unlock button on remote, have on park or neutral, (on vehicles with manual gearbox, clutch must be stepped on while you start) have someone tap lightly on the startmotor as u start, if it starts, replace startmotor, if it doesnt, replace neutral park switch on transmission
