SOURCE: my car squeals when driving in heavy rain

You may want to check if this happens when you have the AC on. If does, then you may have to check the drive belt for the AC compressor. Otherwise check the other drive belts if the tension is correct. Check as well the status of the belts if they would need replacing.

SOURCE: power steering went out while driving and battery

If the water got high enough to cover the front of the engine or was shot up high enough by hitting the puddle it will cause the belt or belts to slip on the pulleys so you can loose power steering or the alt will show low amperage output and will turn on the battery light.

My 53 plate punto fine then the hazards will flash and the power steering goes heavy the hazards won't stop flashing until I remove the battery lead

If your red power steering warning light is illuminated on the dash, and/or your EPS is in-operative, then there are a number of issues that could be causing your problem.

ABS brakes warning light on

Most garages will ask for $1200 to fix it. Their solution is an overkill. They tend to replace most cables and sensors in the ABS system. Many new car owners prefer to buy cars without ABS mainly for the high cost of fixing it. I found a simple fix that should be tried before spending all that money. The fix can be used on other models. I noticed that my problem occured after heavy rain with frequent driving thru puddles and seemed to go away after few dry days. I took it on a dry day to a garage and asked to troubleshoot this problem with the mechanic (no need to mention the smile on his face). I started by disconnecting the cable from the front passenger side sensor (mounted over the disc brakes of the front wheel) and measured the voltage getting to the sensor, it was 5Volts. I reconnected the cable to the sensor and sprayed the equivalent of a cup of water on the cable until the warning light came on in the dash board. I disconnected the cable and I measured 2.5Volts at the connector end of the cable. That showed there is a crack in the cable. A quick inspection of the cable located the cracked spot. After drying the cable with a blower, I added some car grease to that spot and the mechanic wrapped it with a tight tape. Et voila! the problem is gone now for six winters with snow, salt and heavy rain. You may have to inspect all four sensors until you locate the problem. I learned to watch for the ABS warning light after going thru puddles just to remember which side of the car dipped into the salty melted ice on the road. That side would be the first on my list to test if the ABS light ever comes back.
Note: The car was raised on a fork lift, the engine is stopped and the ignition key must be in the Battery ON position when measuring the voltage with a voltmeter. A $5 voltmeter will do. I will never drive a car witout ABS brakes. There is a way to maintain that system for over 12 years without going broke.

I would start by checking main fuses under the hood. water could have cause a short also check battery cables to see if they are heavy enough to carry the amp load needed to start the car. factory cables are not heavy enough after a few years.

I have a saab 1.9 tid the battery not charging light came on ,abs light and other warning lights and the power steering stopped working any idea what the problem is ?

Hi Dave, The problem is that the alternator is not charging, Because of this the battery voltage goes down and the reason it affects the power steering is because the power steering pump is driven by an electric motor ( not the fan belt ) so the system shuts the p/s down to keep other functions running ignition etc, so the engine will keep running to get you home. But steering will be very heavy.
Once you replace the alternator all will be fine
Hope i have been of help to you with this problem

Power steering went out while driving and battery

If the belt gets wet and flies off, or starts to slip, the power steering and alternator will stop spinning causing this condition.

Check belts to see if they are still on the truck and spinning the pulleys of the alternator and power steering pump.

Battery light and warning light on while driving a toyota carina e, plus heavy steering

Have your alternator checked, it is most likely bad. This causes a loss of power which is why the steering is heavy
