Question about Cars & Trucks
I have a 98 ford explorer 4.0 liter no codes engine runs fine. but i get only 10 miles to the gallon of gas. what can cause poor mileage?
I had a 98 Ford Explorer. It was a pig on gas since I bought it, and it was only 2. I kept this truck for 6 years and when I got rid of it and bought a full sized chevy, I thought about how much fuel I wasted in the past. This 2000 chevy 4x4 got double the mileage. I'd suggest selling it.

Coolant temperature sensor can build up galvanic corrosion around its' base, affecting its' ability to accurately sense coolant temperature. The build up acts as an insulator, shielding the sensor from the contact with coolant. Because the sensor is working properly, the PCM doesn't sense a problem, hence, no trouble code. But because the sensor is insulated from the hot coolant, it always reads cool, so the PCM sets a rich fuel condition that is used at startup that never changes since the sensor never senses the engine warmup. Since the PCM set the rich condition, all of the downstream sensors confirm readings the PCM expects while running rich, so, no trouble codes. This can cause enormous gas guzzling in even the most fuel efficient cars, and since no trouble codes are present, it is not something that an average 'Shade Tree Mechanic" would diagnose. It is an inexpensive part to replace; usually >$20.

Make sure all of your tires are inflated to what it says on the tires, make sure tires have good tread and are properly aligned & balanced.check your air filter it might need replacing.also the faster you drive the poorer mileage you will get,but do go the speed limits.you should be able to at least get 17 miles per gallon with that size engine, also lots of short trips of stops and starts uses more fuel.make sure your inside rims are clean and not packed with mud or snow, hope these ideas help
