Tilt the steering wheel all the way up. Reach inside the hole on the right side underneath the ignition. You will feel a metal button. Push it up, and you'll be able to turn the key all the way back and get it out. Mine does the same thing.

But this won't necessary "fix the problem, as you have to do it each time to get your key out. Oh, btw, don't leave your key in this position and parked for a few days, because it will slowly drain your battery over 48 hours. It is better to totally remove the key each time.

Mine just started doing this, and I've totally torn the steering column apart, first to replace the key module and then when that did not fix it, I started poking around and found the "magic" button, too.

Problem might be worn down key. Get a key cut by code by the dealership or a locksmith. It could also be the ignition lock. If so it needs to be replaced.

Key stuck in ignition

Mine has this issue. Under the steering wheel. There is a plastic cover over your steering column. There is a hole shaped like a rectangle about 1 in by 1/2 in wide. If you pull the cover off of this you gain access to a cylinder that needs to be pushed in your direction. If you stick your pin-ky up, and push it toward you, if you want to turn the key toward you it should release for you. The problem is that when your car goes in gear there is a wire that sends a signal to the ignition so that the keys can not be removed during travel. Well this receiver on your steering column malfunctions and does not disengage once the car returns back to the park position.

1997 pontiac sunfire key wont turn in ignition

You will have to have the ignition cylinder replaced in the car. The only thing that keeps that ignition from turning is a little tang on the sdie of it. The only way that tang moves is by the tumblers inside the cylinder moving it. They will have a hard time replacing it too as they can't remove the cylinder from the bore until it is in the "run" position. Obviously there are ways to get them out but it usually involves using half the tools of a good tech's toolbox. if it is towed the towtruck driver will have to use dolly wheels or remove the shifter cable at the transmission to get it to move as it will be stuck in park- unless is a standard shift.
I am sorry for the bad news. Get a second opinion from somebody that can put their hands on it , but it sounds like you have a tried all or most of the tricks.
Good luck...........Scott
