Can't offer much help but popping in muffler would indicate unburned fuel is being pumped into exhaust manifold.

what would cause unburend fuel to get in the exhaust

  • Kelly La Rue Jan 15, 2013

I'm old school, used to be too rich a carb mixture would overpower the ability of the chamber to burn it all but with new cars I'm not sure. It's a starting place.

SOURCE: loss of power going up hill

fuel pump is bad. they are under extented warranty from ford. take to dealer and "insist" they change it. there is service bulletin on this, but dealers often play "dumb".

My van shifts fine at low speed but when I go fast the rpm go above 4000 before shifting

the farther you press the gas pedal the higher the rpm will go before shifting. if you floor it it will redline before shifting. if it isn't shifting at the right time it could be the line pressure needs to be adjusted

You are looking at 2 things a transmission failure and a transmission module failure. I am not a advocate on transmission additive but in your case you need it 2002 and 2004 years was declared a lemon on the transmission so use the additive of you choice also disconnect the battery and reconnect this allows a relearn on the transmission (before you do this get the radio code if you have a radio security

Your catylatic converter may be clogged if your loosing power or top speed is less than it was. You can check this when its running with a battery operated infared heat gauge. the temperature of the muffler should be around the same temp. as the catylatic converter.

Losing power going over hill

well i think the piston ring are already loose, causing insufficient air compression leading to lower power especially on uphill tracks. check also for the air-fuel ratio! too much fuel usually is the cause for thick smoke emission; too much air, causes also less power.
