Question about 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD

1 Answer

98 dodge ram 1500 the truck idles funny and spits and spudders and misses when you give it gas. if you put it in drive and give it gas it does not go anywhere it backfires out the exhaust and intake. But If you floor it it runs as if there was no problem goes through the rpm's with no problem. but anything other than that it backfires and spits and spudders. scanned it and these are the codes that came up. p1683 speed control servo power control circuit p1597 speed control switch always low i replaced the pickup coil on the distributor and i replaced the crank sensor, these two sensors made the problem better but it still does it. i've come to the conclusion that it could be the ecm, what do you guys think????

Code 1683 is for a problem with the EGR solenoid which controls the EGR valve, and code 597 is for the IAC valve not being able to keep idle speed at the correct setting.
A leaking EGR valve could cause the symptoms you describe.
I assume you looked at the cap and rotor and they are ok.

SOURCE: 1997 DODGE RAM 1500 360 VERY LOW IDLE

I think you have ruled out the engine with all the parts you have replace. The transmission torque convertor is in lock up mode all the time. The engine is having to hard of a time to stay at the normal idle. The over drive clutches and soleniod are most likely damaged in the transmission.
I think you should take the vehicle to a trasnmission shop , The can check the torque convetror soleniods and pressure control soleniod.

The oil light coming on bothers me. I know you have the rebuilt engine in the vehicle but I think the oil pump in the engine is starting to go out or could be weak. The lower bearings connected to the crank shaft might be starting to leak. Have the oil pressure checked .

SOURCE: i have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 5.9 automatice 2

code - 37 TCC brake switch circuit error. this is the torque converter clutch. Open or shorted condition detected in the torque converter part throttle unlock solenoid control circuit

  • For turbocharged engines , code 37 will be triggered when the baro-read solenoid circuit is open or shorted.
  • For normally aspirated (non turbo) engines with automatic transmissions, code 37 will be triggered when the Part Throttle Unlock (PTU) solenoid circuit is open or shorted.
  • For normally aspirated cars with manual transmissions, code 37 is sometimes set for no apparent reason.
This is detected when the ECU doesn’t sense near 0vdc or 12vdc at the relay when the solenoid is turned on or off. When code 37 is thrown the power limited light will not be lit and the system will not enter limp mode.

It won't shift 1-2 or 2-3 or both unless you let off? If it is just 1-2 it might be a band adjustment, but I'll bet you have a plugged governor solenoid screen also.

It seems that my 98 Dodge Ram 1500 will not run when I start it cold unless I give it a bit of gas. It seems that the choke is not engaging.

replace the I.A.C --idle air control valve. located on the throttle body. Sometimes you can clean them or even tap on it with a hammer and they will work again, but replacement is recommended. very easy. hope this helps--i've changed quite a few.
