Would the electronic distributor pickup cause a vehicle to spit, sputter and cut out at a high rate of speed ????

First you can not put Bosch plugs in it. Also watch cheap wires from parts house. Also check fuel pump pressure at high speed. Also watch for Catt converter plugging. Try unscrewing up stream o2 on both sides then drive. If goes away plugged Catt. You can scan those and see fuel values. Then you can tell. Any codes?

Throttle position sensor, if it has one. Oxygen sensor if it has one or choke positioner.

Spits and sputters

it\'s your TPS! well Greg first clean intake with toothbrush and carb cleaner! when it gets dirty the throttle position sensor doesn\'t know where it it so it will act like that, so it\'s a good idea to clean it first.

98 dodge ram 1500 the truck idles funny and spits and spudders and misses when you give it gas. if you put it in drive and give it gas it does not go anywhere it backfires out the exhaust and intake. But...

Code 1683 is for a problem with the EGR solenoid which controls the EGR valve, and code 597 is for the IAC valve not being able to keep idle speed at the correct setting.
A leaking EGR valve could cause the symptoms you describe.
I assume you looked at the cap and rotor and they are ok.

Sounds to me like your choke is malfunctioning. Take the cover off of your carb when cold and see if the choke (top buttefly valve) is closed. It should be when cold. (you do not say what year truck you have so I am guessing as to the answer)

After 150-200 miles, spits and sputters on

Clean throttle body, change fuel filter, plugs, and definately plug wires.

Egr seems to be common problem with these.

if there is not a vacuum leak it seems that the signal wire to the MAP is either open or shorted to 5 volt reference wire. if not either of those may be the PCM
