SERIOUS ENGINE MISFIRE, SPARK JUMPING FROM ROTTER INTO THE SCREWS HOLDING THE ROTTER. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?


I had a 96 tahoe 5.7 that gave me hell with the Distributor sparking to the wrong terminal. These Vortec engines use computer controlled timing, but still use a rotating distributor to determine which cylinder the coil's spark goes to. Twisting the distributor does not set the timing like it did for older engines, instead it just sets where the rotor is pointing relative to the cap when the computer decides to fire the coil. Aligning the rotor to the cap's electrodes at the instant of spark is called having the cap "indexed" to the rotor.

In my case the distributor was a few degrees off after an intake gasket change. The engine ran fine for a while, but was always sparking off to one side of the electrodes in in the cap due to mis-alignment. After a while, that side of each electrode became corroded, and rather spark around to the far side of the electrode, it was actually a shorter path to the clean side of the next electrode over. This resulted in stumbling and misfires.

I rotated the distributor a few degrees toward the corroded side and changed the cap and rotor. The next cap and rotor went about 10k further before acting up. I rotated towards the corroded side again, and the same cap and rotor have been running ever since.

Scribe a mark on your distributor and intake for reference and twist the distributor a few degrees towards the corroded side of the electrodes in the cap as the cap sits on the distributor. Don't forget if you take the cap off and flip it upside down, then you need to reverse the direction you twist. You want to twist the distributor cap towards the corroded side with the cap sitting in place on the distributor. This will help move the cap's electrodes closer to the center of the spark-range (as the computer jockeys the timing around, where the rotor electrode points at the instant of spark moves).

How do I change the rotor button on my 99 Honda civic es. And do I have to change the cap also


rotor buttons normally just press on against a clip in the button
replacement of the cap depends on the corrosion on the contact points under each HT lead point in the cap and if the center carbon pin is worn or stuck
if the rotor button has a spring up to the cap then the carbon pin will be fixed but should protrude around 1/4 "
if it is level with the bakalite cap then replace the cap as well

If it does have a cap there will be a rotor allso, But i highly dout that there is a distributor in that year of a van, That they use coil packs in it,

I have spark at the cap but not to the sparks, already change rotr


Ok, heres how the spark works, coil, to cap,, along the rotor to the connection pins of the cap, to the spark plug wires,, and onto the plugs, inside the cap, make sure that the little center piece is hitting the center or the rotor, which goes out to the tip of the rotor,, that sends spark to the pins inside the cap,, now if your cap has any corrosion or tiny cracks,, that spark will go all over the place and not travel down its intended path, so clean off those contact pins in the cap, or replace it, if you have no spark to any of the plugs,, change the cap,, if its just to one or 2 , check the plug wires and the plugs themselves

I DONT KNOW WHAT STATE YOU ARE IN BUT EMMISSION ARE ONLY FOR CARS 94 AND ABOVE IN MOST STATES. ROTOR IS SIMPLE, REMOVE TIRE BRAKE S PULL PIN FROM ROTOR TAKE OF NUT WASHERS ECT, PUT IN A LITTLE AXLE GREASE IN ROTOR IN STALL BACK SAME WAY, -- BUT ME I WOULDNT CHANGE ANYTHING

is it possible the rotor is in the wrong position remove cap and rotor and flip the rotor 180 degrees and you might get lucky hope this helps good luck

My 1990 chevy pickup just stopped running.


there should be 2 clips on from the rotor housing to the cap, pull the clips off and lift the cap, you will want to change the rotor inside as well. do not remove the spark plug wires from the old cap yet...replace the rotor, it will only go on one way, and put new cap on, it too should only go one way. now, one at a time, pull the plug wires and put them on the new cap that is mounted. this will ensure that you have them in the right order.

96 chevy tahoe won't start?


Mine did this with a cap and rotor. I changed it six months prior, but ended up having a faulty cap from Jegs which caused it to backfire. I had crank, spark, fuel, but the cap was crossfiring and wouldn't run.

This cost me a new flexplate, two starters, still a cap and rotor just due to the backfires.

No spark from plugs. changed plugs, rotor and distributor, cables, and primary coil.


i would start with the basics- did you make sure you followed the correct firing order when you installed your new plug wires? when you changed the cap/rotor did you notice any track marks inside the old cap? was the old rotor burnt/corroded? ive got a 97 ram and the cap is a b*tch to get to being buried in the back, could you have inadvertently moved the rotor off its timing mark? mis-aligned the crank sensor when installing your new cap? i would recheck how the cap was installed, just because you were able to position it proper and tightened down the screws doesnt mean that you didnt accidently pinch the wires on the crank sensor, or turned the rotor off its mark. also when pressing on the plug wires on the cap did you look for the "1" mark on the cap? this is your reference point for firing order. im not sure these are you problems, but rechecking your work to make sure something wasnt knocked off-kilter, or wrong plug wire placement would confirm the problem lies other than what was replaced. i hope this helps
