While driving my dashboard displayed the warning sign for oil. the oil level was correct, but still it is rough on idle and makes a lot of smoke. how may i diagnose the problem?

Bummer deal! Rough idle and black smoke indicates a possible bad fuel injector leaking gas - or failing spark plugs. Bad or dirty injectors are a cause of sticky valves, and when sticky do cause rough idle and sometimes valve tapping - beside black smoke. Check those items first as they are most common failures. Rarely, a engine head sealing gasket may leak coolant into the motor to cause such problems. That would make a white steamy smoke. In that case it would overheat - did it? In this case, serious engine work, or a new engine is needed. I like the products at this web sites to end those issues. Hope this helps. Idles rough and smokes when first stated

Worn valve guides allow oil to drain into the cylinders, causes blue smoke, fouled plugs will idle rough.
Coolant in the cylinders from a blown head gasket will cause white smoke.

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

I have a 99 Saab 9-5 2.3L turbo. When I shifted it would blow white smoke for a second. Yesterday it started billowing smoke then died. Now it won't start and it turns over very rough. Please help.

Generally white smoke is a sign of coolant in the engine.
Its possible you have blown the head gasket and coolant is leaking into one or more of the cylinders.
You could pull the spark plugs and check for coolant - also run a compression test.

2000 pontiac sunfire starts only when gas pedal is held to floor, idles rough and white smoke comming to exhaust changed IAC valve..no change

If you have excessive white smoke coming from the vehicles exhaust, it sounds like your headgasket is failing. Especially having a rough idle too. Check your coolant level, does your exhaust smoke smell sweet, like Antifreeze? If so, the gasket has blown. Hope this helps...

I have Ecort 1.8 td from 2000 Y of production, and have white smoke on pipetail and idles very roughly, engine coolent is OK, oil level is OK, what can it be the problem?.

Even though coolant level is OK, it does not rule out a blown head gasket-has the engine recently been overheated? You should get engine compression checked, to see if you have low compression in 2 adjacent cylinders, to rule out the possibility. White smoke and very rough engine performance point to a blown head gasket, however.

91 tempo run rough with white exhaust

If you are sure it is white smoke and the car overheats or looses water,The head gasket is bad.
Or It's valve seals or rings smokes (but the smoke would have a blueish tint)

Rough idle(200-300RPM)off idle runs great no white smoke

Have you changed your fast idle valve or air idel control valve I would change the air idle valve because it is the one with an electric sensor.
