One component that involves all three issues is the key switch.
Depending on what you have to do to make the engine run again, the problem could be in the switch or wiring.

SOURCE: 89 bronco II stars then dies

if the fuel pump cutoff was tripped it would not start at all, I know this for sure, I am a Ford dealer tech and I specialize in no starts and check eng lights. If the ignition switch is bad the 2 halves of the switch will be starting to come apart, it is very common, u should be able to either see it or feel it with your hand.

SOURCE: I suspect a weak battery, but how do I know it's not a bad ALT?

when your car is running disconnect the positive cord from the battery. if the car stays on, than it is your alternator, if not its your battery. also if the car stays on, the head lights go dim if the alternator is malfunctioning

SOURCE: New alternator didn't charge battery. (2VDC

As the car re-started, the battery is not flat.
The voltages measured indicate a problem with either the power or ground connection in the circuit between the alternator and the battery.

You likely have a intermittent / poor ground connection somewhere in the power system.
Check battery terminals are clean and firmly attached.
Check battery cable and alternator ground connections are intact and in good order.

It sounds like the disconnect of the battery has caused the anti-theft system to kick in. Anti-theft overrides the key. There is a chip in the key fob and a chip in the ignition lock, if they are paired and both present, the Engine Control Module releases power to the starter and the ignition circuits. When you connected your battery, I am guessing the key and fob was in your pocket.

Disconnect the battery for at least 2 hours. Hold the negative and positive battery leads together for 5 minutes to fully dissipate any residual power. Very important bit, PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, but not turned on. Reconnect the battery. Wait 15 minutes for the system to self check and reset. Start the vehicle.

My 1987 Ford Bronco II won't start

First you always test things & never replace anything

When you understand how things work & how to test
them, then they have to fail a test in order to need replacing

I would think Fuel Pump--if it quite while driving
Put a gauge on the motor if you have a shrader
valve to do so

Seldom do you need to replace a dist
The parts inside can be diagnosed & replaced
if you can source them

Things like plugs, wires & such you leave until you
know if you have fuel pressure, spark & so on.

Once a vehicle gets to 20 years of age you start
checking for wire corrosion such as around fusible links

Never forget the battery & it's cables & the internal
corrosion possible there

Worn ignition switch a possible

You say won't start,so I assume the engine
does turn over?

You can check the alternator with a volt meter. With the engine at idle you should have 13.5-14.5vdc at the battery...turn on your headlights a/c and blower motor on high...to test under a load.

The 4 wheel drive doesn't work in my 89 Ford Bronco

The sound is not coming from the glove compartment, it is coming from the panel behind the drivers seat, that's where the relays and computer are located.
The relays click and apply power to a transfer case motor.
The motor attempts to turn a shaft that engages the front drive shaft.
When the computer thinks the shaft has NOT turned it tries again.
It will try three times then quit, figuring the shaft has not turned.

Get someone to crawl under the vehicle and engage the 4WD (just turn on the ignition- do not start the engine) See if they can hear the motor attempt to turn the shaft, it will make a clicking sound.
If not the connections or the motor may be bad.

I have found the most probable cause is the relays on the control board.
If you are technically adept --
you can remove the small side panel from behind the drivers seat and remove the control board. (remove the power plugs first)
Clean the relay contacts and bend them a little to give them more 'wipe' to keep them clean longer.
Put it back in and turn on the ignition.
Then push the RESET button on the side of the board.
Try the in / out 4WD a couple of times. If it doesn't work turn off the ignition, turn it back on and push the reset button again.
