Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero
Could be a problem with the blower motor, or a blend door.
The blend doors direct air thru the heater core and out thru the vents.
Someone would need to remove the blower motor and check it.

The blower motor is either bad, or if you hear it blowing in the front but nothing comes out of the vents, then it's a vacuum motor problem. The flaps aren't angled right to allow air to come out of the vents (either for a/c, heat, or defrost).

is it electronic? or manual? The heater box is located behind your dash on pass. side. it's big project it requires recycling your a.c refigerent. If your comfortable with the project, buy yourself a book from your local auto parts store. This book tells you a complete tear down of your car. The book is Haynes

Have you checked the coolant level? If it is low, what you describe will happen, the engine will run hot, and the heat won't seem to work (coolant level too low to circulate through the heater core). Hope it's that simple, if not, let me know and I'll attempt to help further. Good luck!

Testimonial: "Hopefully that is the only problem with the coolant system. thanks for the tip, I appreciate it."
If by "shuts off" you mean goes all the way to the cold or no temp, then sounds like the thermostat is open and needs to be replaced. Could also be the temperature sensor and you are losing the signal. I would check to see the actual temperature of the engine to know the difference.

The first thing that should be checked is the coolant level. All heat is passed into the engine compartment by the cooling system.
