Question about 1998 Lincoln Continental

1 Answer

Car over-heats and heats blows cold air

In cold weather, the heat will begin blowing cold air, mostly when idling, such as at a long stop light or while inline at a drive-though or bank. Once I begin driving again, the air will become warm and the engine temperature will drop to normal levels again. Could this be a blocked heater core?

It sounds like the radiator is low on coolant.
You could also have air pockets in the cooling system if the system is not full of liquid.

No heat but blows cold air

Sound like 1 of a few things. The easiest is air in the cooling system. Bleed it and while car is idling and heat is on full blast. (another posibility is head gasket gone bad)

A/C Blows warm when idle

I can't say much without having the actual code.
When the ac stops blowing cold at idle, the most common reason is not enough air flowing thru the radiator, or the radiator fan is not running and the only air flow is when the vehicle is moving.

There is no heat from heater at engine idle speed.

I have to believe that your thermostat is still sticking....replace it and you problem should go away. Relatively inexpensive fix.

No heat while car is idling

Sounds like low coolant level.. If it's extremely cold out, say 10 below zero or more, it could just be plain to cold. In that case, temporarily blocking a portion of the radiator with a cardboard cutout can help,, but make absolutely sure the cardboard is in front of the radiator, between the cars grill and the radiator, and not anywhere it could absorb fuel or oil and cause a fire... Also,,, make sure it's removed when the weather warms up in the spring. But I expect you'll find your coolant is low and when the engine is at idle, you not getting good flow of heated coolant through the heater core.

Why would my heater blow out cool air when sitting still and then hot air when going down the road and then it's not all that hot

Try flushing or blowing high pressure air through the heater core lines. its sludge build up and need to be flushed through heater core only. check antifreeze fluid level. only put in straight antifreeze, do not mix. most people do not know what mixture should be, so be safe and add straight, it will not hurt it, i run 100% straight antifreeze and never had a problem or worry about it ever freezing and cracking my block, heads or radiator cracking.

AC blowing heat and air at same time

Yeah Ron, the flap that covers the heater core is open and when you're moving the air is pushed over the heater core and into the cab your in. Possibly just a vacuum line of that controls said flap. Check all vacuum lines for good proper connection to these flaps because all of them are vacuum actuated.
