If your engine is overheating, Try this procedure:

  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

My van is overheating and the heater is not blowing hot air.


Possibly the thermostat is locked closed not allowing the fluid to circulate after it gets hot. The water pump might also be nonfunctional, but sometimes a bad water pump will leak.

Wouldn't both you & your mechanic only need to know
that it runs hot & losses coolant,to almost suspect a bad
head gasket ,out of the gate & then do the correct testing?

My 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo is sometimes running hot. My overflow tank remains full. But the radiator is losing water somewhere but I see no water on the ground or anywhere else. When I take the radiator...


indicates an air lock in the cooling system
could be from a failing head gasket ( do a compression test)
have a coolant pressure test done to find the leak
possible a water pump seal leaking when running
check sump oil for greying color ( failure of the housing behind the pump impeller

My car runs hot and leaks antifreeze. I have replaced the thermostat and water pump. It doesn't do it constantly, it can go all day with out doing it and sometimes it leaks like crazy.


The overheating of the car can be due to many reasons and you need to check on each one to confirm the working of the system.
1. In the first place the working of the engine must be assessed. it must be smooth with a good indication that the tuning timing and the power seems good. This will confirm that the settings of the engine is good and so there is less scope that the engine seems to heat up on its own.
2. Secondly the radiator pressure cap must be tight and good, the radiator MUST not loose coolant after a run or in a few days time- since this must be a sealed system and there is no scope of water overflow or loss unless there is a leak- sometimes the leak is too microscopic as under high pressure only steam might escape and so reduce the coolant. So check for leaks while the engine is hot , specially the radiator, the hose or the fittings.
3. The working of the water pump must be good to ensure a good flow and circulation, so check for leak in the water pump, check for presence of water in the exhaust or leaking on the engine gaskets.
4.Make sure that the coolant is good and clean if not drain and refill , if there is presence of rust please have a good flushing of the radiator or else the chances are that the radiator ports can be blocked and reduce the efficiency of the cooling .
5. Finally the cooling fan, the radiator fan must be working, check the thermostat/thermistor to work accordingly with good flow, have a good water jet wash on the radiator for a clean radiator cooling fin exposure.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic coupe, i only have heat when accelerating and the car is running hot, I have replaced the thermostat, the car is still running hot, I had a test done on head gasket and the air...


there are only three places for coolant to leak.external leak to the outside of the motor,internal leak like a head gasket causing the motor to burn coolant(white smoke out the tailpipe),internal leak(coolant leak into the motor oil.)you say that the head gasket was tested and it was okay then this takes care of burning coolant,however it could be leaking into the motor oil.check the oil level and condition.I would think the tech would have checked this,but check it just in case.if the oil level is good and not thick or white or milky looking then this is not the problem.you could have a leak externally like a hose leaking a frost plug leaking,water pump leaking,this should be checked out by having the cooling system pressure tested a carefully inspected for leaks

I have 2002 chevrolet tahoe with 150000 miles that just started pushing out a quart of water every 3 days. just replaced thermostat and have had radiator flushed every 30000 miles . is the problem water...


Try to locate the source of the water loss. If it seems like it is leaking from the front in the center of the engine, then look under the water pump and see if it is coming from the weep hole. If it is coming from that hole the water pump has failed and needs to be replaced. The best time to check it is with the engine hot and sometimes it needs to be running depending on how bad the leak is. If it seems like it is coming from the front of the engine but near the sides check to see if you have a split hose.

It must be leaking somewhere. pressure test the radiator system.
sometimes a blocked thermostat will push coolant out the overflow

Bit odd that mechanics cant find it but here are a few suggestions:
1. A damaged seal on the water pump. As the water in the cooling system is both hot and under pressure when the engine is running, and the pump shaft rotates at high speed, water leaking past a water pump seal will be thrown off the water pump shaft and evaporate very quickly. When the engine is stopped, and the water cools the pressure reduces and so doesnt force the water past the seal, so apears to be okay.
2. A core plug in the engine block has rusted through enough for a very small leak to occour, again when the engine is hot. Core plugs are very often obscured from view by ancilaries such as ignition parts, alternator, exhaust, etc, so are very difficult to see when the engine is running.
3. Rubber hoses can become porous as they get old (10 years is plenty old enough) and as for the two possibilities above, only "leak" when the engine is hot so even a very close visual inspection may not show the leak.
4. If you can smell antifreeze inside the car, particularly when the engine is hot, then you may have a leak on the heater matrix which is like a mini radiator inside your dashboard. If you find the car steams up a lot even on a warm and dry day, this is a good indicator of a leaking heater matrix.

I have personaly fixed "untraceable" water leaks atribuitable all of the above over my years of working on cars. Unlike a proffesional mechanic, time wasnt money for me so I spent many hours finding some of them. Good luck !

Seems like you might have a couple of problems. First the gas gauge, check your fuses to see if they are still good. Then check the wiring as you may have a short or a bad ground. Lastly if everything checks out then you may have faulty sensor in the gas pump housing in the gas tank, and or faulty temperature sending unit located on the motor. As for your your overheating issue you may have a head gasket leak which these little motors are prone to having, or just a general coolant leak. I deduced this because you're constantly having to refill with water. You have a leak somewher, but to narrow it down to your head gasket check your oil to see if it's got coolant in it. It will look like chocolate milk and may even smell like coolant. Also check your tailpipe with the car running in park and up to operating temp, if you see white smoke coming out the tailpipe that white smoke isn't smoke but water vapor, caused by water entering the combustion chamber from the leaking head gasket and exiting the exhaust. Also you may have a faulty fan switch on your radiator. This would cause your engine to heat up drastically in bumper to bumper traffic because when you're driving cool air is rushing through your radiator, and when you slow down and stop so does the air flow, and if your fan doesn't kick in your radiator isn't able to do it's job and cool the coolant.
